Never got one, never missed having one.
Huh. My ring is now in the college catalogue. If you want to see what it looks like, go HERE, and go to the ring catalog. Mine is similiar to the “Piroutte”, on page 10, only mine is gold, with a “blue spinel” (blue and gold were our school colors), and the “19” was a lot smaller.
(That one is also cheaper looking than mine)
I also had my entire name engraved on the back, rather than just my initials.
Never got one because I planned on going to college, Did get a college ring. My wife thinks the Baby sitter took it. I have tried to get it replaced.
In my high school, we got our class rings in 10th grade, so we had 3 years to wear them.
Most importantly, boyfriends and girlfriends exchanged rings, so the rings had a purpose.
Didnt you ever hear the song “Wontcha wear my ring around your neck”
Exchaning class rings with your boyfrind/girlfriend meant that you were going steady. Dont they do that anymore?
At least when in my high school, circa mid-90s, no.
Got mine back in '74 and I doubt I ever wore it more than a couple of dozen times. Big, ugly and useless. Eventually I gave it to the most beautiful girl in the world. When she gave it back that killed any interest I ever had. Nether of my kids felt the need to buy one.
Same here. I also never had much love for high school anyway. I just wanted to get the hell out of there and I figured the less I had to remember those years by, the better.
My best friend OTOH was super-serious about the process of selecting one. He wasn’t too fond of high school either, but for him it represented some sort of coming of age.
He literally spent hours poring over the Jostens brochures. I remember they had motifs for just about every sport and activity imaginable from football to deer hunting to motocross racing. He was on an Asian/martial arts kick back then, so I think he chose a dragon for his.
I have one. I got one from the Voice Collection at Jostens so it doesn’t really look like a class ring but more like a silver band with a blue stone. I like it. I enjoyed high school and did well there. I wear it sometimes but I don’t have a lot of other jewelry so it looks conspicuous.
Josten’s. Large, gold, with a sapphire stone. $300or so in 1980.
My girlfriend in high school wore it (wound with tape so it would fit) for a while.
While out rappelling, it wouldn’t fit under her gloves she was putting on, so she took it off to put in a pocket. She dropped it and it dinged off the 300 foot cliff once and landed in the creek below.
I never took my eyes off of it, and I swore I could see its tiny glint from far above. I made it down in 2 jumps, took a step, and picked right up out of the water. Truly a miracle. I vowed never to let anything happen to it ever again.
I think I got about 40 bucks for it at a pawn shop a couple of years later.
Stoopid kid.
I just went to the Josten’s site and re-created my ring.
$666.95
I don’t think my kids are getting one.
I wore my boyfriend’s ring for a while in high school (the 80s). I still remember the day I looked at my hand and realized it was gone. Stark freaking panic for about an hour, then my Aunt Debbie found it wrapped up in a dishtowel I had been using. Thanks, Aunt Debbie!
Sold it during the whole Hunt Brothers thing to get a good set of flatware; still using the flatware. Never got one for college.
This is kind of a sore point for me. I told my folks I didn’t want a class ring and told them I would rather have the $75-$100 they were going for at the time. They had a lovely Colt Woodsman at the hardware/sporting goods store we frequented, and I wanted to buy it, instead. I think it was about $80 and I might have negotiated it down a bit. My mom veto’d the purchase. Colt discontinued them that summer and their prices immediately shot up to several hundred dollars, if they could be found at all.
I had my high school sweet heart’s ring in my jewelry box for a long time, but I eventually gave it back to her, and my wife keeps it in her jewelry box now :D.
Would it be stupid to buy a college ring years after one graduates? Because like I said, I wanted one, but couldn’t afford it at the time.
High-school rings are big, ugly things, and I didn’t have much interest in wearing a ring anyway. So I didn’t buy one.
Not where I went to school, or at least if they did they didn’t talk about it. I didn’t have a girlfriend in HS, just some… ahem acquaintances, so maybe I just missed out.
Sure. It’s in the same dusty wooden box that the awards I got in high school reside. It’s too small now
Nope. A friend of mine wore her father’s ring for a long time (he also went to MIT) but eventually got her own. When I went, men’s rings were different from women’s rings. Go for it. The ring company will just assume you lost yours and want to replace it.
I do still have mine, and it’s in fantastic shape due to having been worn only until I got my college class ring. I’ve worn it a couple of times in the past few years. I got an onyx for the stone, so it goes well with black outfits.
