redtail-I KNOW there is a difference. And I don’t BELIEVE it’s all about the kinds of things you see in Tapestry of Polygamay. HOWEVER…it still doesn’t sit well with me for some reason.

I’m still saying I for one would never agree to it. But, whatever floats your boat.
I wasn’t aware that agreeing with someone that your debating skills in this instance are lacking (where elsewhere they assuredly are not), admittedly by your own choice, is considered “rock-throwing.”

As one of the board’s Latter-day Saints, I think it might be time to mention:

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (aka Mormons) does not, I repeat: does not, permit or condone polygamy (or polyandary for that matter).

Practicing or preaching polygamy, either one, will get one excommunicated from said church (assuming, of course, one was a member to begin with).
To shock many folks i want to say Monty is completly correct.
However, SOME CLAIM that in Utah, some orthodox Mormons do 'wink at" others practicing polygamy. I do not claim this- but I will admit is seems possible.
And the wierd, pervo polygamous 'cult" that redtail wisely wishes to distance himself from is some odd non-mainstream, non-orthodox offshoot of the Orthodox LDS Church. Thus, it can be argued that they belong to “A” mormon Church, but certainly not “THE” Mormon Church.
And- what redtail says is true- that MOST Polygamous relationshsips are LIKELY nothing like that wierdo 'cult". They SEEM to consist of 3 consenting adults living togther.
However, note that Redtail has not been forth coming is describing his polygamous relationship.
Oh, and it does not really need to be mentioned, but of course redtail is also a cheap pissant for attacking Jodi, whom I have great respect for.

Jodi - Honestly, I never thought that someone would post in the Pit if they were going to be so upset by a casual insult - and a fairly humorous one at that. If my intent had been to offend you, I could have done much better. I’ve tossed that phrase off for over a decade and I’ve never seen anyone get so riled.
As I said before, I am sorry to have offended you so. If you choose not to believe me, then there’s nothing more I can do.

Yup, I know that the LDS doesn’t allow polygamy and I generally try to explain that for people that don’t. Thanks for the clarification, though.
On the other hand, those folks consider (and call) themselves Mormons. It’s kinda like the old “who’s a real Christian” debate…not one I want to get into. I’ve lately taken to calling them ‘un-Mormons’, but that’s the best I’ve been able to come up with short of typing some lengthy phrase that explains the exact situation (which doesn’t work very well for repeated references).
Any suggestions?

What sort of thing would you like to know? I’m not sure why I’d want to change your mind nor what I’d change it about. All I wanted was for you to acknowledge that the Tapestry information & stereotypes only apply to a small group and do NOT apply to the rest of us. Since you’ve admitted that, I’ve got no quarrel with you. Although I am still trying for my fondue set.
I’ve deliberately not posted information about my personal life on the boards - I’ve seen where that can go. But if you’ve got questions, I’ll try to answer them. Can we take it back over to one of the GD threads? I’d rather not get into that type of discussion in the Pit.
I can understand an “ick, that’s not for me” response. I know there are lotsa people who have no interest whatsoever in a poly r’ship. I just don’t think that’s really a valid basis for legal discrimination.
