Do you think Rick Perry could make a comeback?

So we’ve pretty much cycled through all the not-Romneys now. Santorum even got his turn, which I incorrectly predicted would never happen. Now I’m wondering if Perry might have his turn again. Here’s my reasoning:

Perry is the only not-Romney who I ever honestly thought would beat Romney. He was the only one with the backing and the credentials. He had eleven years experience governing one of the largest states in the nation, and did an excellent job with the economy during his term. He had lots of endorsements, and, most importantly, lots of financial backing from the establishment. I remember reading somewhere that he and Romney were the only candidates with enough resources to really run a 50-state campaign.

Right now we’re going to New Hampshire, where Huntsman is campaigning hard, but even IF he got his moment in the spotlight, he does not have the resources to maintain his momentum. Perry is, I think, the only one with the resources to campaign hard and emerge as the front-runner against Romney.

Thoughts?

I think he’ll drop out after losing in South Carolina, where things are moving in Romney’s favor.

There are three major things preventing him from making a comeback…

That’s it in a nutshell. He never recovered *viability *let alone competitiveness. His debate ‘performances’ were (in)consistent enough to create the impression that it was more than a lack of public speaking ability, it was a significant dearth in gravitas and ability.

Further, he/his campaign seemed to recognize that enough holes were poked in the Texas Miracle that he tried reinventing himself as the Brokeback Jesus Candidate–but that garnered him little traction.

While anything is possible, I don’t see the shine coming back to him barring a major unexpected turn of events (see the Romney dropout thread).

Eight unelected and frankly unaccountable judges (referring to the Supreme Court - there are 9)

Kim Jong The Second (Kim Jong-il)

Commerce, education and the, um, uh, what’s the third one there … Commerce, Education and the, um … the third agency of government, I would do away with: Education, Commerce and let’s see … the third one, I can’t. Oops.

New Hampshire caucuses (they’re “primaries”)

Is it the Mitt Romney that was on the side of against the Second Amendment before he was for the Second Amendment? Was it—was before he was before the social programs, from the standpoint of he was for standing up for Roe v. Wade before he was against Roe v. Wade?

You don’t need to sit in a pew every Sunday to know there’s something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can’t openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school

Oh yes, we’ll be inaugurating President Perry any day now.

Who’s gonna stop him?!

Quick quiz: who was the person who said there were fifty seven states.

Very good - that one’s only four years old! Seriously, a couple of those are mental errors (although there are a lot of them), but some are policy statements. Do you understand the difference?

I’ll just leave this here. Though I may want to retract it after hearing that he said “Kim Jong the Second…” Although apparently Bush said it, two.

There were fifty-seven nominating contests and the man misspoke. I’m no Obama defender, but it’s pretty sad people have latched on to this scrap when there is so much legitimate material to criticize him for.

President of the United States of America Barack Obama. Yup, he said it once.

Huntsman is rich and his dad is even richer. So if he won NH I think he could come up with some resources pretty quickly just by opening daddys wallet. Thats pretty much how he’s funded his NH campaing.

But he wont win in NH, so it doesn’t matter.

And Perry won’t make a comeback either. He made himself too much of a joke to fast for people to vote for him. He has “disaster” written pretty clearly on his forehead.

I think the only way Romney even gets close to maybe losing is if he’s left with only one challenger in S. Carolina to unify the anti-Romney vote, other wise the anti-Romneys split the opposition and he wins easily.

Yeesh, we are talking about whether Perry can be the comeback kid, and you bring this into it? Weak.

I always thought you were were somewhat an ideologue, but now you are turning into a partisan hack… think about it.

This is funny. Every time someone tries to say “Obama did it too” in a comment about some conservative politician or commentator saying something stupid, without fail, this is the quote they reference. I remember when there was an article on The Blaze about Palin’s Paul Revere word vomit, every other post in the comment thread mentioned “57 states”. What’s funny, is if you actually watch the video and pay attention, you’ll notice he actually said there were 60.

Obama has been president for three years, and was on the campaign trail for nearly two. He’s done countless rallies, speeches, debates, press conferences, and interviews. Yet when pressed to find some stupid comment he made, the best you can ever come up with is a simple verbal typo from four years ago. You’re really just making him look better.

And more to the point, Perry’s habit of deep-throating his foot really is a major reason his campaign has foundered. The debate blunder and some of these other things have led people to conclude that he’s got nothing going on between the ears. It’s also true that he’s screwed up on policy by giving the “wrong” answer on illegal immigration, for instance.

You’re heartless!

From someone more clueful in general, that would be a nice bit of snark about how the stage of history after True Communism is Hereditary Monarchy. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah.

As a Presidential candidate?

No. Not in this cycle, not in the next, not ever.

This has been another edition of Simple Answers to Simple Questions.

I wouldn’t bet on Perry making a comeback; i wouldn’t bet against him either.I can only hope that even the republican voters have had enough of Texas governors as President.

It’s become an article of faith among the right that it wasn’t a verbal slip-up by Obama, it’s that he really believed that there were 57 states.

That’s right, they truly believe that a sitting U.S. Senator (one of 100, two from each state, ummm… math is hard) doesn’t know how many states there are. Someone who sits in strategy meetings discussing how to take control of the Senate, how to make it veto-proof, etc. doesn’t know how many states there are. Yet, they believe it. Whatever.

To the OP, I don’t think that Perry will come back to win the nomination, but I think he will see a second rise in the polls as others drop out. He is the only one with money and the organization to do it, and he will garner many of the votes from the others as they drop out. I just don’t think that the right is ready yet to fall in behind Romney. The base really, really doesn’t like him.

Yes, I was just responding to the mental errors part. I hate the “Strong” ad just as much as anybody else here.

I certainly don’t think that.
