I’m sorry for your loss. I hope our ‘intellectually curious’ discussion of it doesn’t come across as crass morbid curiosity. I certainly never forgot while watching it that I was also seeing the end of 7 human beings’ lives.
It’s not the equipment sliding around that causes it to flop over like that, not directly anyway. The cargo broke free of its restraints and slid backwards, that moved the centre of gravity too far aft which meant the pilots were unable to prevent the nose of the jet from pitching up, causing it to run out of airspeed (imagine riding a bicycle up a hill that is too steep) and eventually the wings were unable to create enough lift. One wing lost lift slightly before the other and the result is the “flop” to the side you see in the video. You can get the same effect by purposefully letting the speed wash off while holding the nose high. Do it with enough altitude in an appropriate aeroplane and it is fun!
I never saw this video until just now. And now I will never erase it from my mind.
Amazingly terrifying. I am sorry I watched it. I cannot imagine the horror the 7 people on board experienced, even if it was only for a few seconds.
It moved in a completely natural way–if the way is a stall.
I am saddened by your loss, jnglmassiv.
That’s just another example of how real life isn’t the movies, he was in the car by himself (well apart from his dog) so no real need to talk out loud. He was probably doing all his surprised reactions and exclamations inside his own head.
If one is interested in these things the video of that recent TransAsia ATR-72 mishap is also a stall / incipient spin interrupted by arrival at ground level.
In this case the video doesn’t show the whole accident sequence, so you don’t see how it began or the transition from normal to abnormal flight. But you do see the later stages while they have a lot of roll rate and yaw going on. Or less technically, while they’re sliding sideways and moving “unnaturally”.
Which is “unnatural” only in the sense that they’re moving in a way that’s different from the normal motion of normal flight and hence is unfamiliar-looking to the layman.
Not at all and yes, my earlier post in this thread does seem a little mopey.
I was just adding what I could to a discussion about an undeniably interesting and rare video.
Same here, really. I wish there had been a warning, but I’m probably a wimp. Not that I blame the OP - I mean, if turned up on FB in an “entertaining” compilation of mishaps then it’s probably not something that a lot of people are sensitive about. But I wish I hadn’t seen it.
Jnglmassiv, I’m sorry for your loss.
Pookahmacphellimey, I agree with you. I think people died in several of those clips, and I don’t think snuff films are “funny”. Some of the clips were funny. But most were scary, and a few were horrible, including that crash.
