Do you trim squash?

Mrs. Grey and I planted a squash plant in our new vegetable patch, but we had no idea it was going to attempt to take over the backyard. The single plant is huge and getting bigger every day.

Can I prune the plant or will that effect the squash production? I’d like to prevent it from overwhelming the beets and carrots, but I do want some squash.

No, but I squash trims.

[sub]Lousy know-it-all trims, squashin’s too good for 'em, I says, but with the economy the way it is…[/sub]

Is this a bush-type plant or a trailing one?

If it is a trailing one, you might just be able to ‘redirect’ the growing tips back through the same patch and avoid the need for trimming altogether.

If it is a (compact)‘bush’ type and the leaves are in the way, trimming a few of them off won’t hurt much, but you are reducing the plant’s capacity to manufacture food and consequently the total crop weight will be reduced a little (probably not noticeably/measurably so if it is just a leaf or two)

Its a trailing one I think. I guess I’ll redirect and selectively prune as needed. Thanks guys.
