Do you use music transcription software?

I know these programs exist, but I don’t know how they work or to what extent.

Can they really “score” a song?

In my dreams, these programs would transcribe solos not for note, as well as tell what guitar chords are being played. The program also would slow the song down w/o losing pitch.

Can anyone enlighten me about these programs?

Thanks!

most of the “transcription” programs I have ever seen have as their main function the ability to slow a track down without loss of pitch. Some also offer some looping, eq filtering or voice cancellation utilities and at least one contains a spectrum analyser which attempts to guess the occasional strong note. This particular feature has variable success. As for automated transcription programs, I would not expect one anytime soon. If one were released I would expect to spend a lot of time correcting it. Even a single musical line has extremely complex waveforms. Start throwing harmony into the mix and you’re just asking for trouble. For the moment your best bet is to do it by ear. It’s good ear training anyway.
