Since I couldn’t vent to the culprit herself, I thought I’d share here…
I was just driving home from work down a 2+2 lane urban road with parking on both sides. Single yellow stripe down the middle. I’m in the left lane, 40 mph, and there’s a car in the right lane up ahead, driving slower (25 mph), which I figure means the driver is looking for parking or maybe looking for a particular building. About the time I’m 100 yards away, the driver decides to U-turn from the righthand lane right across my path (!!!). I screech to a halt as she casually proceeds in the other direction. (I didn’t look back, but I’m now guessing she spotted a primo parking spot on the other side of the 4 land road and couldn’t wait to go get it.)
If she had waited another 2 seconds to initiate her U-turn, she’d be halfway lodged in my grille.
Aiya, crazy lady!
Anyway, feel free to share your own recent stories of driver stupidity.
The most recent one was someone I saw on a sharply-curved ramp from one highway to another. He got onto the ramp at the last possible second, almost drove off into a ditch, then swerved and almost went off the other side. I saw him later tailgating people one after another, rather than just pass them in the wide-open left lane.
I was following a guy like that on my way home from work last week. All surface streets, on a one-way divided thoroughfare that is four lanes wide, 35-45 depending on which part of the city. This guy needed to stay in the far right lane for some reason, and swing wildly around anyone slowing to turn or just not go fast enough to suit him, never bothering to see if he had the necessary room in the next lane. People were slamming on their brakes, swerving into the next next lane to avoid being hit, just an utter train wreck waiting to happen. And he was driving a huge panel truck, which made it all the more horrifying when he started driving like a damn video game.
I debated on trying to get some corporate info off the truck to call in and squeal on the guy, but decided to just wait back and let him get a light or two ahead of me instead.
I saw a great one today, as I was approaching a freeway interchange. That side of the road is five lanes wide at that point, with the right two lanes branching off onto the other freeway. Some idiot in the far right lane suddenly decided he needed to stay on the original freeway - after reaching the point where the road divided - and swerved across the two lanes into the divide. At the same time, another idiot on the main road, in the #2 lane, decided he wanted to change freeways. So he swerved across two lanes into the divide. I sucked in my breath, thinking they were for sure going to hit each other… they barely managed to avoid it. Morons. We’d probably all be better off if they’d taken each other out.
