I totally agree about the Tom Baker and Leela combo this was my favorite match up and I think they were in the best episodes. Fang Rock, Robots of Death, Talons, Sunmakers. The thing about Leela was how independent, tough and aggressive she was and at times she even killed a real prototype of Xena.
If memory serves Tom Baker absolutely hated the character of Leela both in the aggressiveness and violence portrayed by her actions in what was regarded as a children’s show and by her upstaging him, he gave her a rough time and lobbied hard to get rid of her.
They cast Georgia Moffett in the fourth season as the Doctor’s Daughter. She’s the real life daughter of Peter Davison (the fifth doctor). Later, Georgia was romantically linked to David Tennant for awhile in the real world.
Georgia did a good job playing the Doctor’s daughter. It opens up the possibility of a female Doctor. But, so far that hasn’t developed.
I was lucky (and old) enough to watch Doctor Who from the start (mostly from behind the couch  ).
Tom Baker is clearly an alien in real life , so playing the Doctor came naturally to him.
I think Tennant is marvellous too (though the modern classy special effects do help him.)
Elisabeth Sladen was a good-looking companion and she’s still fine.
(Although I have to put Lalla Ward as my favourite on looks…).
I shall miss Russell T. Davis, but Stephen Moffat did write ‘Blink’.
I agree with HPL that this was the best-ever episode as well as the creepiest!
I can’t speak for the UK date, but according to the BBC America website they will be airing it on December 19. Which is good because I will be out of town on November 19th, and it’s one less thing I need to remember to set up on my DVR.
As someone who was involved in fandom at the time Davison started the role, he was HEAVILY criticized at the time as being ‘too young’ to portray the doctor…in both the British and American fandoms. This was just about the point that many PBS stations in America started airing the show, and the American fandom was exploding. The ‘first doctor’ for most of them was Tom Baker.
Davison was widely regarded by most of these fans as a casting mistake of huge proportions, especially in regard to his age and his perceived ‘blandness’. I’m not exaggerating - been there, done that, edited the newsletter.
So, given the history if the fandom…the ‘too young’ reaction is not particularly out of line.
