Doctor Who Christmas Special 2013 - Matt Smith's final episode (spoilers as it airs)

LOL. To quote Olympia Dukakis’s character Rose in Moonstruck, what you don’t know about women is a lot.

Believe it or not, sometimes “fangurlz” are attracted to things other than mere square-jawed Ken dolls. The right style, the right accent, the right attitude, and we’re all there.

I mean, from the start, your premise is off, because there’s nothing wrong with the looks of any of the men you mentioned (least of all Ferguson, WTF?). But more to the point, each one of them has charm, dash and charisma up the wazoo.

I’m not a Tennant “fangurl” (hmmm nicely dismissive there) but again, he’s dashing, he’s good-looking enough, and he’s got plenty of chemistry with everyone. Oh, and like Capaldi, he’s an immensely talented actor.

If Capaldi could make Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It an attractive character despite Tucker’s foul-mouthed, manipulative cruelty (and yet I know lots of women who sigh over his more vulnerable moments and how kind he is toward Sam, his female assistant, in the second-to-last episode of Series 3, and that’s a scene of about 5 seconds!), he can sure as hell do it for the Doctor.

As mentioned above, Hugh Laurie in “House” turned that misanthropic mess into a massive sex symbol. Laurie, an incredibly humble man, was likely astonished, but I certainly wasn’t. All that and without his British accent, too! If Greg House had kept Laurie’s accent, yowsa.

If there are fandoms for Tom Baker’s Doctor based on ‘shipping’ him with his various companions, I don’t see why Capaldi shouldn’t get some loving either. The man is an eye-magnet no matter what he looks like–he commands attention in everything he does. I’ve been looking forward to this regen with bated breath ever since the announcement and I can’t wait to see what Capaldi does with the role.

I may have just forgotten this, but how did Clara and The Doctor ever get out of the latter’s timestream? What I remember is, Clara jumps in, oh no, she’s lost, no wait, Doctor’s going to jump in as well, but that’s impossible, you can’t do that etc. etc., emotional farewell with River Song projection, then in anyway; inside, lots of running about of old incarnations, out of the shadows steps John Hurt, some dramatic dialogue, and then I don’t know if anything else happened. Next thing I know, Clara’s teaching somewhere, and then the TARDIS gets towed by helicopter. What goes in the blank?

Fair enough. My mistake.

The time war went on for a very long time. Long enough for the War Doctor to age visibly. The Day of the Doctor only negated the END of the time war. We can safely assume that all of those things still happened.

Another possibility I’ve read elsewhere is that it might be because he was on his final regeneration. Of course, we’ve seen the Doctor old before, but have we ever seen him growing old?

Paul McGann regenerated into John Hurt in a on-line episode.

We don’t see the War Doctor directly in Night of the Doctor, we only see a reflection of his face, and they used a picture of a very young John Hurt for that. (That link should go to a picture.)

The War Doctor was fighting for a very long time.

Well, DUH! I believe I demonstrate that often enough, here and IRL.

Glad you noticed!

He is that, in the right role. Not so much in Fires of Pompeii, but that role didn’t ask for much beyond looking awkward in a toga.

Nice word,“dashing.” I know exactly what you mean, but there hasn’t been much call for it in recent decades. Tennant does dashing very well, but who else? Could be a new thread.

That he did.

Will it hurt?

Oh, I missed that reflection. Thank you.

:smack: I just now got that.

Question for our Brit Dopers. I heard Matt Smith say something about a new cycle of regenerations. To my American ears, that says 13 more Doctors, but could this be some Britishism (Like how your “series” is our “season” or how you guys live in a flat on the 20th floor, while we live in apartments that are all stuck together?)

So…just to make sure I get this, they really did change all the numbers of the new Doctors, right?

Paul McGann regenerated into Doctor #9 - John Hurt

John Hurt regenerated into Doctor #10: Christopher Eccletson

Eccletson - Tenant: #11

Tenant - Smith: #12

Smith- Newdude: 13

Right?

Nope, Tenant had a regeneration that he stayed the same and he healed River, I think. So he counts twice and Smith was #13.

Indeed. I think they just wanted to put this 13-regens thing to bed sooner rather than later.

Okay, but we’ve all seen how, in his teens, Capaldi was one of the most obnoxious fanboyz of all time. Would that explanation satisfy Peter at Fifteen?

Timey wimey wibbly wobbly HEY LOOK A CYBERMAN flees topic as everyone is distracted
(IOW, yeah, good question but one I don’t think they’re interested in answering on the show)

What was that weird arc with Catherine Tate and the Doctor’s hand, where she acquired part of him?

The hand regenerates into a half-human clone of the doctor.
Donna gets the Doctor’s memories.
After a while having Time Lord knowledge in a human brain is too much. The Doctor has to wipe her memories of her time with him. If she remembers, she’ll die.
The Doctor sends his half-human clone to live with Rose in the parallel universe.

No, I think the “13 more Doctors” interpretation is the right one.

Sad as it may sound, the above makes more sense than anything from Moffat.
