Doctor Who - Twice Upon a Time (open spoilers)

It’s aired in the UK, but has yet to air here in the US for a few hours.

Thoughts? How was the regeneration?

I am watching the BBC takever. 2.5 days. I have never liked Peter, but I am more wary of a woman Doctor. We will see. I am trying to be open minded.

I’m extremely wary of a female Doctor as well, but I’ll try to be open minded. One of my closest friends died this year, he was the one who encouraged me to take up New Who, so I’ll watch the episode tonight when it airs in the United States in his honor.

If I’m not sold on the new Doctor, I figure that’s my excuse to subscribe to BritBox and enjoy classic Who, I’ve missed it.

I’m rewatching Davids Tennant’s episodes now. That is the high point of the series for me.

We won’t know how Jodie does until next year.

She only briefly appears in tonight’s special.

We won’t be sold on her tonight … at least traditionally the new Doctor only makes a brief appearance in the regeneration episode at the end. We’ll briefly meet her, maybe hear her complain that again not a ginger, and then we wait until whenever the next season comes out.

Anyone know what Capaldi has lined up next?

The episode was quite good. I was a bit disappointed in the regeneration though. Whittaker was only on screen for 20 seconds and only said two words (literally, two words). There was no reason they couldn’t have given her a few more lines like they did with Smith and Capaldi. Given all the hype, I felt a bit cheated tbh.

Also, I’m not at all happy she’s kept her native Yorkshire accent, especially since I know from her other work that she can do a flawless London accent. It’s an irrational prejudice on my part but I just can’t stand Yorkshire accents

I really enjoyed the episode, and I’m not a Capaldi fan.

Just before they returned the Captain to the war, I asked if we knew what his name was. I said that I bet it was Lethbridge-Stewart because he resembled the Brigadier. Seconds later found out I was right!

Would have liked to have seen more of the new Doctor though.

What did the new Doctor say?

‘Oh, brilliant!’

Really? Abandon ship based on the intro episode?

I just saw the YouTube clip of the regeneration, which starts at the point where the Doctor is talking to himself.

I can’t judge the plot without the rest of the episode, but I was also disappointed by the regeneration. All the rest of the effects in that part, and they transitioned with a close zoom in on their face and a misaligned crossfade. I can buy that it’s supposed to be a homage to Old Who (as I seem to remember some of the transitions looking like that–perhaps even the first one), but I watched the YouTube vid to see how good they’d made the effect by now.

I couldn’t understand the two words the new Doctor said, either. I guessed it was something set up earlier in the episode. I was not expecting her to fall out, either. But since no one else seems to be commenting on that, I’ll guess that had been set up before. Was it the Tardis rejecting her? Are we having the Doctor stuck on Earth for a while, ala the 3rd Doctor?

Matt Smith’s Doctor fell out of the Tardis. he grabbed an antenna on a building? Just as he crashed in Amy’s/Amelia’s backyard.

Haven’t seen the Show tonight. It’s downloaded.
Probably watch tomorrow.

Indeed, that was Steven Moffat’s first episode as showrunner. He ended his run the same way he began.

I liked it. The Testimony didn’t fit in with anything else that has ever gone on the show before - if the Dalek Hive Mind knew about it, how is it that the Doctor has never encountered it, given all the dead people he’s been around? - and will never be mentioned again, but that’s just Moffat being Moffat. It was worth it just for the interaction between Capaldi and David Bradley, and it was nice that Nardole got his cuddle so we won’t even quibble about how his robot memories could be harvested by the Testimony plus did Clara actually get her last heartbeat in order to be there too? But the way the Christmas Armistice was depicted made me a bit misty-eyed, and I’m happy to see what Jodie Whittaker does with the role next.

I’d don’t watch Dr Who but it was Christmas and family and whatnot. General sentiment was how moving it was - new friends old friends, memories, time passing, even the commonality of man. Even a few proper laughs.

No enemies.

Plenty of Christmas type themes interwoven. p.s. Some women turned up at the very end. Recognised her from the local sports centre.

Very good, the vulnerability of the Dr. was my favorite part. I liked Capaldi better than I have.
I like the actress playing the new Dr., we’ll see how it goes.

Maybe, as an American, I’m just not familiar enough with the various English dialects, but could you really recognize a Yorkshire accent from just two words? She didn’t sound particularly unusual to me.

I just appeared in a local play about the Christmas Truce of 1914, including the singing of Silent Night in both German and English. This episode totally ripped us off!

Oh no, I’ll certainly give it a few episodes. I’m just quite leery of a female Doctor in general.

It was enough to confirm that Jodie is going to use her native accent, at least.

Mark Gatiss’ character got the best line I thought “What do you mean World War One?”. Quietly chilling.

I have the same reservations. They need to write for a Female Doctor. Don’t just cast a woman and give her the same scripts as a man.

They made that mistake with Janeway in Voyager. She was basically James T. Kirk with boobs. It was a wasted opportunity. Women leaders bring their own unique talents & style to the job. The writers need to look at Maggie Thatcher & Golda Meir for inspiration of a strong female leader.
