What was the line Clara said when the young graffiti artist asked who she was? Something like “I like to burst on the scene and keep my intentions vague, so call me The Doctor.” I loved that.
Sometimes I think this version of The Doctor does what he does to get back at Clara for snapping a barb his way, like when he became The Caretaker.
I liked this episode a lot, although I don’t think much of “Boneless” as a villain’s name. I think “Flatliners” would have been better.
And I agree with the others who said the bit with the hand coming out of the TARDIS to move it off the tracks was “Addams Family”- ish. I even said, “Thank you, Thing.”
(Since the Doctor’s so smart, maybe it should be “Thank you, Think.”)
Excellent, excellent episode! I’m a sucker for a visually interesting premise, and the overall look of the Boneless, the dissected nervous system on the walls, even the hilarious site gag of the Doctor’s hand reaching out of Clara’s purse- all of it was top notch. Set and art design must have had a field day with this one. Easily the best looking episode Doctor Who has ever done, IMO.
Twelve seems to be softening a bit, and I’m glad for it, as long as he keeps that ascorbic wit. And I’m going to miss Clara SO much when she leaves. She was awesome in this - I loved, “What would the Doctor do next? No. What am I going to do next?” But I’m definitely not loving her drama with Pink. As long as he’s regulated to the corner of the episode, he’s fine. Sadly, he seems to be featured next week. Alas.
I liked the speech. I also liked that this didn’t have one of those cloying, sorry just a misunderstanding resolutions. I tried to talk. I want you to remember that. I tried to reach out, I tried to understand you, but I think that you understand us perfectly. And I think that you just don’t care. And I don’t know whether you are here to invade, infiltrate or just replace us. I don’t suppose it really matters now. You are monsters! That is the role you seem determined to play, so it seems that I must play mine – The man that stops the monsters.* I’m sending you back to your own dimension. Who knows? Some of you may even survive the trip, and if you do, remember this – you are not welcome here. This plane is protected. I am the Doctor and I name you The Boneless!*
Loved this one too. The Doctor should hang out in Clara’s handbag full time. That’s a show I’d watch.
And no, I can’t explain why the science not making sense is ok here and not in Kill the Moon. Wish I could, but it didn’t bother me one bit here that 2-d beings could exist, or that things can move from 2-d to 3-d and vice-versa. Maybe because it’s so inherent to the premise? I dunno. I just know that I liked it.
Moon Egg - wasn’t enemy of earth - just was
Sheriff Minions - adamant about getting off earth
Skovox - weapon of war attracted to earth - not specifically enemy of.
flatliners - trying to build an army of 3d things to take over - or at least become known. I guess we don’t yet know their true motivations
Agreed. The bits with the Doctor passing objects like a sledgehammer through the Tardis doors, the Addams Family escape scene, it was all hilarious and played very well. This is possibly my favortie episode of the season so far.
For me it’s the difference between the science of things that actually exist, versus the science of things that don’t. The Moon exists and has been studied extensively. We have placed seismographs on the moon and hit it with rocket stages to make ti ring and map its internal structure, we’ve brought back pieces of its surface and analyzed them extensively. We understand the moon really, really well. We also understand at least how gravity behaves, if not what causes it. We also understand how the space shuttle works, how dynamic range of vision works, how orbits work, how liquids behave in vacuum, and a great many other things. Kill the Moon violated known facts all over the place, and furthermore had a plot that depended on doing so.
This episode had completely nonsensical science, but it was all about completely made-up things. Monsters from the second dimension? Who knows how they work. There’s no known rules to violate, so the episode is free to make up how they work and nobody can complain. Likewise, there’s not much to complain about in the Orient Express episode, because it’s not like anyone can rightly complain “Magic trains in space don’t work like that!”.
OK, that was fucking excellent: the mixture of horror, genuine tension and comedy were judged absolutely perfectly, and Clara’s cunning plan that restored the Tardis through Rigsy’s mad trompe l’oeil graffiti skillz was a cracking resolution: it was only about half-way through that I actually realised that this was a Doctor-lite episode. Best moment? When you suddenly realised what the forest mural on the wall actually was. I think this one will be a go-to episode for recommending the show to people.
I really don’t know why I care but was the Skovox a robot or a cyborg? I would rather not watch that episode again to find out.
This was an excellent episode, watched it and loved it. I loved the mysterious ambiguous aliens, I loved the variety of side characters, it just felt great. And little Danny Downer to spoil it.
