I haven’t been watching Doctor Who as long as some other people but got the impression that the companions were usually unknown actors prior to getting the part. This person, on the other hand, has an established career. Perhaps it’s that with the male Doctors, the companion has often been an attractive young woman (Billie Piper, Karen Gillan, Jenna Coleman, etc.).

Billie Piper was well known in the UK before Doctor Who. She had a successful music career, which she abandoned to concentrate on her acting, and a rather notorious marriage with Chris Evans, a Radio 1 DJ and very popular TV presenter, where she was 18 and he was in his thirties.
