Am I the only one that thought that the “hottest fire in the universe” was going to be the “destruction” of Gallifrey?
That’s where I figured he was going (my wife recognized the Movellans).
She got in the T.A.R.D.I.S. That’s all you missed.
OK, so she asked, “What changed your mind?” and he said, “Time.” Then she got in.
I didn’t get the Doctor going back to take the photos either. Guess I’ll have to re-watch that scene. I also found Bill’s accent very hard to understand, and I almost never have trouble when watching British TV shows.
That’s where I thought they were going as well, especially when we heard the Daleks.
I liked this episode. The Doctor’s been going through such angst lately it was good to see a more lighthearted story.
But I couldn’t believe Bill was foolish enough to lean over when she saw Heather’s face in the puddle on the other planet!
Speaking of the TARDIS, when was the last time anyone has spelled out the acronym - has that ever been done in the NewWho era?
Pretty sure it gets mentioned at least once with every new companion. I did like Bill calling out the fact that acronyms don’t really work with universal translators.
Never mind - this article TARDIS - Wikipedia says the acronym has been spelled out a few times in NuWho, most recently in “The Doctor’s Wife.”
I suppose my problem with it is that if “let’s get in the Tardis and run a long way away” is going to be proffered as a solution to every alien menace, episodes are going to be awfully short now.
It wasn’t far off. As the Tardis lands you can hear Daleks in the distance shouting “The Doctor is detected! Seek! Locate! Destroy!” which is them finding the War Doctor on Galifrey from the 50th anniversary special, just before he comes flying through the wall at them.
More completely he said (with maybe another word or two in there): “Time … time … and relative dimension in space.”
IOW that the Tardis convinced him.
another reason he chose Bill -
“When you hear someting you don’t understand - you smile”
He stammers and looks confused a lot in frothy whodunnit in pretty location Death In Paradise, which doesn’t bode particularly well.
I hear what you say, but this was clearly a “new viewers start here” episode*, so I think they really needed to include a scene introducing the Tardis and what it can do.
*Made explicit by the title: only a series about time travel could have episode #828 as “The Pilot”. Moffat must have been giggling to himself all day when he thought of that.
That location in Sydney, Australia is a real place you can go, frequently photographed, but not exactly the tourist hotspot it implied. Though there is a water taxi stop a little ways away, which is probably what they decided to pretend it was.
Well, that (“Smile”) was one of the weakest they’ve had in a long time.
Haven’t seen ‘Smile’ yet, but ‘Pilot’ made me think about the “All those quarries” comment in the Rowan Atkinson comedy Doctor Who video.
Can someone remind me about the vault he referred to and why he’s supposed to remain on Earth?
I think that these are mysteries that will be resolved in the current season.
I could hazard guesses, but would most likely end up looking foolish once it is revealed.
Dseid, what was weak about it? I haven’t seen it yet.
I didn’t mind it, but I think this season they’re going for a Russell T Davies, David Tennant and Martha vibe, except that they can’t quite pull off the cheery spontaneity - and fresh-faced and wide-eyed isn’t Capaldi’s strong suit - so it feels rather forced. Also that one looked really cheap, like they blew the production budget on the robots and had nothing left for the city mattes. I mean, the hydroponic garden set wouldn’t have looked amiss in a Peter Davison episode.
