Doctor Who Series 9 discussion (spoilers as it airs)

Just in case we still need to spoilerbox …

Me could have taken the shade what with immortality and all.
Also by now Me would not be so naive as to think that sending the Doctor to a death sentence is an overall benign event for the universe.

For some reason those bits take me out of this one more than the usual complaints do.

As to Capaldi’s statement on Norton … the Doctor lies … and so has Moffat … and I don’t put it past an actor playing the Doctor to lie as well. I think it would be a mistake for this to be a misdirection (albeit the street is all about that) but I would not bet against it.

And I would not rule out the Mayor doing something noble and redeeming before the end of the next ep.

I dunno. Are we supposed to think Clara was heroic in taking on Rigsy’s death sentence? Cause I think it was just a really stupid way for her to go.

That was the entire point. She was getting overconfident (and also perhaps seeking death a little) and died by her own hubris. No fanfare, no grand sacrifice, just a companion who was too clever by half.

Which is inevitable if you’re travelling with the Doctor, Clara’s biggest flaw in being The Doctor-lite is basically that she can’t regenerate. (Granted it’s unclear if regeneration would’ve even helped here. I assume Capaldi would’ve taken it if it would have). If it wasn’t THIS it would’ve been something, a stray Dalek shot or whatever else.

Me isn’t immortal in that way, they said that Me can still die if she’s killed, she just can’t die naturally (and can probably recover from graver wounds than most people). Just like if the Doctor gets crushed by an elevator he won’t be able to regenerate.

I’ll gladly exchange last year’s rewritten sendoff for this year’s sendoff as long as they don’t reveal it was all a dumb illusion or something in the finale.

Excellent episode.

I think Jenna Louise Coleman is an excellent actress and cute as a button, but Clara has been a mess of a character. I’m really hoping that whatever companion comes next is better handled by Moffat and crew.

Who has kidnapped the Doctor?

Is it the return of Gallifrey?

The Celestial Toymaker?

The Master of the Land of Fiction?

That was my first guess, but it probably isn’t. Something like that deserves an epic build-up and reveal.

Gallifrey is probably coming back in the last episode, at least.

That was wonderful, I was completely gripped throughout. Have they killed a companion outright like that since Adric? The hidden street as alien sanctuary was a great concept, very bit Neil Gaiman, but it never felt like a rip-off. And I love it that she went out not in a great heroic sacrifice, but just through being cocky and over-confident. And the Doctor’s reaction, where he threatened to rain hellfire on the street until Clara talked him down, was just perfect. Also I really want his coat,

I have GOT to get better speakers for my TV. I missed at least half the dialog. I’ll have to rewatch it on my iPad with closed captioning, or wait until Monday to read the transcript.

That said, I got the gist of the episode.
I used to like Ashildr/Me. She could have done something, like secretly tell Clara about the deal, since she admitted she liked Clara.

I missed how Twelve using the TARDIS key on the stasis machine resulted in a teleporter bracelet he couldn’t remove.

As to who kidnapped him, I’d say we’re going to see Missy and the Daleks again. This was her brilliant idea from Witch’s Familiar
And, btw, I knew it was a stasis machine when I first saw it, because it looked too stupid to be a morgue

In order to turn the key, he had to put the key in the key-hole, which meant putting his arm in the bracelet-attaching apparatus. I suppose that if he had known in advance, he would have used tongs or something.

I think it was established that Missy was the one who sent Clara to the Doctor in the first place, but her reason for doing that has yet to be revealed. If there is truly going to be no more Clara episodes, it seems like some Missy exposition on why she did that is in order soon.

…And so in the end, Clara Oswald was killed off and the Doctor was teleport-abducted away by…oh, let’s say Moe.

By the way, does anyone else find the pronounciation of “Ashildr” incredibly grating? I’ll put in a disclaimer here: I’m clueless about written phonetics… but I had old norse in high school and did fairly well.

I’m assuming it’s supposed to be old norse, but “As”(could be As, Æs, Ås) is pronounced separately from “hildr” and the “d” should probably be pronounced as a soft “th/dh” or a “d” followed by a rolling “r”. Not “Ashielde”, more like “As/Æs/Ås-hildr/hildur”. I’m not suprised she’s confused when they address her as Ashielde.

Or ‘a child’?

Watching that again, it’s easily the tightest writing of the season. Nothing extraneous, nothing rushed or muddled, and you weren’t left scratching your head at the end trying to figure out the mechanics. For instance, I thought the scene of the aerial search in the Tardis was a little bit of effects indulgence that didn’t add anything to the story, until we saw Clara dangling out the door whooping with glee. It brought it back home how cavalier and dangerous her behaviour was, and set it up perfectly for her switch with Rigsy. First-rate writing work from Sarah Dollard: she’s exactly what the show needs right now.

I just remembered something.

There’s one immortality device left. I think I know who’s going to get it.

I thought there were only two? The second being the one given to the dashing robber type in the last episode we saw Ashildr…

HMHW is correct. It’s been used already

:smack: Crap, you’re right. Never mind then.

Nope, I didn’t know either - I’ve been making an effort this time around to avoid spoilers before seeing the episodes. I think I’m enjoying them more than way.

I knew she was out this season, I just assumed Clara would give up travelling with the Doctor. I like it better this way, assuming it sticks and they don’t keep trotting her back on for return appearances. I was never a Clara fan anyway: Jenna Coleman was fine as an actress, but the roll-the-dice writing meant that she never developed a consistent character beyond “the girl”.
