Er, I left out the word “standard”, as in a Dalek episode that is just Daleks exterminating shit rather than, say, Asylum. Obviously it’s a Dalek episode with the title.
Very solid episode I thought.
The Doctor/Clara dynamic is great now, I’m pleased that Jenna has got something to work with. As for the plot, well Daleks gonna be Daleks I guess, but this was my favourite New Who Dalek story since Dalek back in the 9th Doctors run. I’m guessing Missy is collecting the souls of the people whose death has been caused by the Doctor for some nefarious purpose?
It’s a bit early to judge the Danny Pink character, just yet
This was a pretty amazing episode. Possibly one of the best of the entire revival.
Clara: I’m his carer
Doctor: That’s right, she’s my carer. She cares so I don’t have to.
The best part of this episode is that the Doctor outright trusted Clara to “do something clever”. He basically trusted Clara to be as smart as he is in the Dalek’s memory hub, the Doctor almost never trusts companions to be competent.
I’m a bit disturbed it was a Dalek uttering the line “resistance is futile”. I was sure that when the writers finally caved in and used it, it would have been a Cyberman
I don’t know how to do spoiler boxes, so I’ll word this carefully. Three thoughts:
They reached for the Daleks so early in Capaldi’s reign? They’re getting a little over-dependent on them, I fear.
How did all the goop disappear from their clothes and hair so instantly? Don’t tell me - sonic screwdriver’s “dry-cleaning” button.
I like the Doctor’s attitude to the first death. I hope that’s going to be a part of his character in this incarnation.
First appearance of the Daleks per Doctor:
First Doctor: second episode
Second Doctor: first episode
Third Doctor: Three seasons in, but Terry Nation didn’t allow the BBC to use the Daleks for the first two years.
Fourth Doctor: fourth episode
Fifth Doctor: Third season
Sixth Doctor: seventh episode
Seventh Doctor: fifth episode
Eighth Doctor: Mentioned in passing the the movie, but he didn’t meet them.
Ninth Doctor: fifth episode
Tenth Doctor: Second season
Eleventh Doctor: Third episode
Current Doctor: Second episode.
So it’s not particularly early to show the Daleks.
I’m surprised no one expected Rusty to revert to his bad old ways as soon as he was repaired.
Rusty did give a rather long and lingering look back at The Doctor before he left. There’s a future love story there I think
I read elsewhere that the leaked working copy of this episode ends differently, with Rusty self-destructing aboard the Dalek mothership. That would have been fine too, but I like the prospect that the team have decided to keep a potential Dalek ally/lover/stalker in reserve

A diagnostic test would reveal Rusty’s alterations and he’ll be repaired and evil again. I’d expect that the mother ship has repair facilities.
I thought the original ending made more sense. Self destruct on the mother ship before there’s time to get checked and repaired.
They crawled through a “very hot” tunnel after the goop pool. The implication was that it heat dried their clothes. Obviously in real life they wouldn’t dry that neatly, but for TV logic purposes it made sense.
How did they dry out so fast after falling in the goop?
A hot tunnel crawl in-story, but really just “TV”
I’m liking Older Clara Who Is A Better Actor. She was a bit of fluff last series. Now she can give an old man palpitations. As for the Doctor and Ross, wow. Just wow. I have never seen anything so cold-blooded. This is not your daughter’s Doctor Who.
I think he specifically referred to it as a “decontamination tunnel” or something of the sort.
Ah, it was this line:
Doctor: Watch it, decontamination tubes are hot.
Though one wonders who built Daleks with decontamination tunnels and why…
I strong dislike the current Doctors attitude about soldiers. One of the Doctor’s closest friends was General Lethbridge-Stewart. This Doctor is insulting a lot of fine people that put their lives at risk to protect their countries. The Doctor served with Unit for years. He himself fought in the time wars.
This Doctor’s attitude towards people that serve and risk their lives is appalling. This race of people in Into the Dalek were obviously very near total defeat. Their “warship” was a converted hospital ship. I noticed the soldiers were older men. That implies their younger men had already died fighting the Daleks.
Me likey the tone they are taking with Capaldi’s Doctor - it’s true,
Letting Ross die so damned cold-bloodedly was very much a shock, but overall, I thought the tone of this episode was a little uneven. Look how quickly it shifted from
cold-blooded to flippant, right after that scene?
Also, I didn’t see that the Dalek was a “good” Dalek, just because he wanted to kill all the other Daleks; that just makes him a Dalek with a different target. The Doctor I could see thinking that any being that wants to kill a Dalek is “good”, but I expected something more from Clara - who is shaping up to be the conscience of the show, this season.
Rusty’s seeing into the Doctor’s soul, and seeing the hatred there, was a gutsy, interesting choice.
Nope. This is your daughter’s Doctor House. There’s even a bit of a resemblance!
Me, I’m loving the new Doctor. Much as I adored Ten (and I did, and I do!) I also like the darker-edged, less fluffy Doctor. This guy is in command, and nobody’s going to doubt it. I like that.
