Doctor Who Series 9 discussion (spoilers as it airs)

That’s my take on it, as well. Doesn’t Davros have a line about “children going their own way,” or something?

Agreed.

I just re-watched it before tonight’s ep, and without in-laws talking. I totally missed that they actually called them “hand mines”, I just thought people on the internet were being witty. Snake dude had a name, which everyone used, but I’ve forgotten already (Colony Skarf? Snarth?). I still love Missy, and I want her boots.

Both Missy and Clara are wearing cheap and nasty time vortex manipulators, with Clara’s slaved to Missy’s (explicitly stated). When the Daleks start warbling about maximum extermination, she strikes a pose, and her energy appears to zoom upwards for a second, almost as if she’s being beamed up rather than zapped to smithereens. Huh. And presumably if she’s then hiding outside somewhere, she can tap the remote control on her master manipulator to do the same to Clara just as she runs and the Daleks start to zap. Although Clara’s energy effect didn’t appear to move upwards in the same way.

TLDR - building up to another "Not dead, back, big surprise, never mind.”

Most likely, although imagine the job interview that would have been:

Davros: “Where do you see yourself in five years?”

By the way, when the servant self-serpentified, I sang out, “I won’t become a snake. It never helps!” (Which is from the “If I Become an Evil Overlord” list.)
My husband pointed out that it seemed to help this time.

I enjoyed seeing the Shadow Proclamation again. I hope they bring it back.
I liked this episode. I thought it was the best one since the one where the TARDIS shrank last season.

The Daleks have often had an ambivalent relationship with Davros anyway - they’ll seek him out for help, but don’t necessarily follow his advice or accept his leadership.

Missed the edit window. The eyes on the hand mines reminded me of the eyes on hands in “The Fires of Pompeii” episode. I thought those were really spooky, even though they were just drawings.

I understand that interpretation but I disagree with it.

No spoilers, but I loved tonight’s episode. Michelle Gomez is just supreme as Missy, the best incarnation of the Master ever.

Anyone else have this Duffy song stuck in their head now? Mercy (Duffy song) - Wikipedia

Also the electric scooter he’s got hidden under his robes makes me hum Snakeguy On A Segway to the tune of Girlfriend In A Coma.

Something I should have realized earlier: Daleks don’t disintegrate people.

So, yeah. Teleporters. The only question is, how did that fool the Daleks or the Doctor, who both ought to know what it looks like when a Dalek kills someone?

Rule #1.

Davros was impersonating both the Emperor and Darth Vader in this episode.

“Let me see you…with my own eyes.”

Turned out the one thing I was right about was “Man, Davros is playing you for a sucker. DON’T touch those cables…”

I think I preferred it when the TARDIS was indestructible … as opposed to simply being able to reassemble itself after being blown up. Of course, this isn’t the first time it’s done this…

But if you believe the Doctor, he knew all along that touching the cables was all part of Davros’ plan, so who was playing Who?

Best episode in a long time; the interplay between Davros and the Doctor was fantastic, and Missy was just hilarious, especially with her pointy stick. The ending with Young Davros was just as it should have been, although seeing the Doctor with a gun was slightly jarring. This was also one of the funniest episodes in a long time, with the one-liners just rolling out one after another: even Davros got one, with his chair quip. “Supreme Dalek - your sewers are revolting!”

My only issue with it - and it’s a slight one - is that Clara was wholly overshadowed, to the point of being superfluous and helpless: she couldn’t even think of a way to tell the Doctor that it was her inside the shell, and needed to be told to open up? I’d have liked to see her outwit Missy by letting him know that it was her in there, quoting Jane Austen or something.

IT IS A TRUTH UNIVERSALLY ACKNOWLEDGED THAT A SINGLE MAN IN POSSESSION OF A GOOD FORTUNE MUST BE IN WANT OF A WIFE

And I just found the Dalek Relaxation Tape:

THE ACHES AND STRESSES OF DAILY LIFE ARE FLOATING AWAY

Wasn’t Clara in a dalek suit when we first meet her a few seasons ago? Is this that Clara?

Yes - and the reason she seemed so helpless inside the shell can be attributed to PTSD

eta - although Soufflé Girl (The Dalek Asylum) was a splintered Clara (Name of the Doctor) so she wasn’t consciously aware of the memory

As usual, I’m in the minority in what I like in a TV show. I don’t like Missy.
Suggesting the Doctor destroy the Clara/Dalek? Really? And this is a character we want around?
I don’t like having character arcs to root against. They’re a drain on my enjoyment.
Give me the monster of the week, let the Doctor do his thing, and I’ll be happy.
I might have missed this point - why did the Doctor go along with the plan…if he actually knew what was going on? What was the upside? Is the damage to the planet important enough?

That was one of the million Clara’s, if we go with the version that happened after she entered the Doctor’s time stream.

This…is kinda awesome.
