Does a "copy controlled" CD mean I can't put it on my iPod?

I just bought my first copy controlled CD. The first thing I did, as I do when i buy CDs, is I tried to put it on my iPod, but of course I couldn’t. I’m pretty unfamiliar with copy controlling. I’m wondering if there are *legal *ways to get around this so that I can put it on my iPod.

I must note again that I bought this CD. I’m not trying to do anything illegal. It’s just more convient to carry around an ipod on the subway than a discman.

What software are you using to rip it? Most audio CD copy protection is pretty easy to bypass, because the CD still has to be compatible with regular players.

If the disc contained any malicious software, though (like the infamous Sony rootkit), you might find it hard to rip the disc or any other disc from now on. You should hold the shift key when inserting audio CDs that might try to install software, or just disable AutoPlay entirely to be sure.

I’m using a mac, and this morning I found out how I could copy the songs from the disc to the harddisk, then from the hard disk into itunes/iPod.

Fortunately, it’s not a Sony disk.

Thanks.

[minor hijack] Somewhere in another thread someone posted a link to a registry edit that would disable Autoplay so that you don’t have to hold down the (left?) shift key. Anybody know where I can find that? Thanks, [/hijack]

I downloaded tweakui from microsoft. Among other things it allows one to turn off autoplay for optical and flash drives.

You could also just press “Shift” as you’re inserting the CD.

OK, I found this link in another thread. It’s not the link I was looking for, but it looks like it will work.
