Does anyone call Marilyn Manson, Alice Cooper, Ice-T etc by their real names anymore?

A bit of an unusual question this one, and one that’s perhaps a little hard to give a definite answer to, given that we don’t know all the people with whom rock stars and other creative types with unusual assumed names interact; nonetheless, I’d be interested to see if anyone can have a crack at answering it. The question is pretty much self-explanatory; does anyone still call Marilyn Manson by his birth name, Brian Warner (which, I was most disappointed to discover, wasn’t the name of the actor who played the Jewish kid in ‘The Wonder Years’); Alice Cooper by his birth name of Vincent Furnier; Ice-T by his real name of Tracy(!) Marrow etc? I mean, if any of these guys wanted to do something that required the signing of legal documents, would they actually be able to put their stage names on the requisite forms (given that those are the names by which probably 99.9(recurring)% of the human race knows them), or would they be legally required to use the names their parents gave them? I’m assuming that, in most cases, they didn’t legally change their names; the names by which they are now known were just stage names they came up with early on in their respective careers, and which sort of stuck over the years.

Short of an actual legal name change like Prince/clef/whateverthesedays most stars uses their non-star legal names when signing legal docs like contracts and mortgage docs. Not sure about CC bills. I don’t know if a CC company would issue a card to “Madonna” or “Bono”.

Their mothers.

aside from appearing before a judge? probly not.

and look at mark wahlberg as an example that people can recover. they just need lots of support. its tough.

Prince was actually born Prince Rogers Nelson. Probably a safe bet that’s what everybody calls him.

I saw Alice Cooper a few years ago in his Phoenix sports bar, Cooperstown, and shouted “Hey Vince!”. He quickly looked and gave a friendly wave just like that was his real name or something. Go figure.

The newspapers will usually use their real names, especially if they’re in some sort of legal trouble. (The “Cop Killer” controversy comes to mind.)

And BTW, it’s Tracey Morrow, I believe. Tracey is actually a fairly common guy’s name.

Prince never legally changed his name during his symbol period. His songs continued to be registered for copyright under his legal name Prince Nelson.

Madonna is the Material Girl’s real name, by the way. Madonna Louise Ciccone, and named after her mother Madonna Louise Fortin, who was of French-Canadian ancestry. I myself know a Madonna in Wisconsin’s Belgian-American community.

I heard a funny story from Alice Cooper on the radio just this weekend. He was travelling in Germany, and came across a street performance of a puppet show. The puppets were singing Italian opera, which he thought was cute, so he put some money in the donation basket. One of the puppets said in a high voice, “Thank you, Alice!”

Their mothers? :stuck_out_tongue:

I read that Iggy Pop pretty much goes by his real name, James Osterberg, in matters not related to his music. That surprised me, because it just sounds like one of those pseudonyms that someone would use 24/7.

I remember a cartoon of Little Annie Fanny in Playboy that lampooned him as Icky Poo. Alice Cooper and the New York Dolls were in the same strip, but I can’t remember what they were called.

Alice Cooper’s next door neighbor is early rock crooner Pat Boone. Pat calls him Alice, and they’re good friends.

I’ve heard that the 80’s rocker Meatloaf has a credit card under the name Meat Loaf.

My guitar teacher, who is an encyclopedia of all matters rock music-related, swore that The Edge’s mom actually calls him The Edge.

I’ve heard that too. His Fight Club appearance was under Meat Loaf Aday but his more recent movie roles credit him as “Michael Aday” or “Michael Lee Aday”

Anyone know what his actor’s union card says?

I watched the “Motorcycle Mania III” show on Discovery Channel where Jesse James goes riding with Kid Rock, and 90% of the people on the show, from James’ employees to James himself call Kid Rock “Bobby” or “Bob”.

Rap star DMX, aka Earl Simmons, has a penchant for being arrested. I guess the more he is in trouble with the law, the more his fans ‘admire’ him. He’s been busted for robbery, assault, rape charges, DWI, etc. His latest bust was at Kennedy airport for impersonating an FBI agent, and pulling a gun on a guy over a parking space. Anyway. A good friend of mine was involved in his latest arrest, and the following is true. At his arrest, at his appearance before a judge, at his court appearance,…he INSISTS on being addressed as DMX. Not Earl, not Mr. Simmons, not anything but DMX, because, and I quote here “That’s how my people know me!”

I’ve wondered before now if Laura Philippe uses that name in her private life, or if every - even her family - just calls her Reece Witherspoon.

I’ve heard that, although Jennifer Aniston continued working under her maiden name, she took Brad’s surname after they married and uses Jennifer Pitt in her everyday life. No cite, no idea how accurate that is.

FWIW, I know the mommy of a gen-yoo-ine Rock Star[sup]TM[/sup], and she does call him by his “stage” name, but his stage first name is actually his real middle name, so it’s not much of a stretch.

I’ve read that Vince Furnier has always said that Alice Cooper is just a character he plays on stage and he goes by his real name.

Whoopi Goldberg and Natalie Portman are both stage names. Both actresses use their birth names in real life.
