I’m with you- I already thought Moore was an asshole, and it now appears he’s a a scumbag as well.
But sadly, both Left and Right make excuses for sex crimes perpetrated by people on their side. I’d like Moore and Roman Polanski to be cellmates (toss in Gerry Studds and Bernard Law). But I seem to be alone in that opinion.
Huh? Who, aside from a few Hollywood assholes, is defending Polanski? Lefty Dopers have been pretty united and consistent in that abusers “on the left” (Polanski, Weinstein, Louis CK, etc.) are just as anathema as those “on the right” (Trump, O’Reilly, Ailes, etc.).
I thought about adding to this thread last night with another example to add to the OP. I live in 'bama and an hour or so after the news broke about Moore I hear my co-worker walking over to another co-worker saying “you know what they are trying to do now? some woman is coming out now and saying Moore sexually assaulted her 40 years ago.” As I said in the OP, I try to avoid political talk at work now just for my own sanity, but I had to get their take on this. But, of course, I walk away disappointed.
One guy, probably my best friend who makes life at work enjoyable, says “politics is dirty (implying that the allegations are untrue) and it’s just not that big of a deal to me, it doesn’t affect my vote”… The other guy, poster child of the evangelical angry old white man stereotype, says “all men are depraved, he probably did this before he was saved, before he became a christian… or the demonic democrats and that Mitch McConnell is behind this, he doesn’t want Moore up there cleaning house!”. So yeah, there is absolutely no deal-breaker for conservative voters anymore. Even if the accusations are true, “it’s not a big deal” or “people change”.
I have a daughter a little bit younger than the accuser was at the time and it infuriates me that someone could vote for a man that attempted to sexually gratify himself with someone so young… if it had happened my daughter, I’d have a hard time not beating the guy to bloody pulp, but somehow these people just don’t care. How hard is it to not actively condone this behavior and just not vote for him? I don’t understand it and day by day I just lose more hope for humanity.

Hollywood gave the guy an Oscar in absentia- they freaking LOVE him.
Yes, and those guys suck, but are no more representative of the left than Ted Nugent is of the right. Lefty Dopers have condemned both, just like you.
The Oscar was awarded on the quality of his work which is outstanding, not the quality of his sexual behavior.
Between “Hating Muslims isn’t technically racism” and the spirited defense of Moore on technicalities and other nonsense, I think a new political truism has emerged: There is no one more pedantic than a Conservative who knows they’re wrong but won’t admit it.
That’s nothing new.
