I might not like fashion, but I sure do love band names.
I’m the exact opposite…
I would rather undress a woman than myself.
1984 called and they requested you stop using their jokes.
A number of years ago when I had a well-paying job, I sometimes purchased more expensive clothes, and it did nothing for my happiness level. Now I prefer to wear t-shirts most of the time, unless I am going out, and I prefer less expensive ones now because if I spill something on it or something, it doesn’t matter, since it only cost a couple of dollars.
My ex inspected my new abode yesterday and we took a walk in my new neighbourhood. When we passed through the local mall she commented “It’s a pity you’re a man and thus by definition totally indifferent to the lovely clothes’ and shoe shops here”.
Clothing and fashion has never “registered” with me. I know nothing about it and do not care about it at all. I wear jeans and plain old shirts 99.9% of the time. Even at work.
Just like her character, Tracy Lord, who scruffed up her fiance’s riding habit because it was too new. Her social class considered it common to care visibly about clothes. So Hepburn pioneered slacks for women–and ended up looking effortlessly elegant in her private life. In film, of course, she had the perfect body to show off the best work of Hollywood’s costumers…
I dress fairly cheaply but do care that the pieces I wear into the outside world go together harmoniously. Since my shoes tend to be sensible, I like nice (but not “designer”) purses. Of course, neat & clean goes without saying.
If somebody wants to wear “crappy” clothes, that’s their thing. They are sending a message, whether or not they know it. If you must go out into the world, better to find a simple look & pieces that go together easily; non-ragged jeans & a non-wrinkled shirt are OK for many settings. An ironic T-shirt & sweat pants won’t do unless you’re actually exercising. If you’re larger than average, don’t give up; the right clothes (again, nothing fancy or expensive) can help. Going too far towards “informal” skirts the edge of smelling bad…
I think, if I had more occasion to wear better clothing/shoes, I’d care more. I have a work uniform and I wear mostly jeans/tshirts/long-sleeved tshirts/hoodies and sneakers when I’m not working. I do have a couple of “dress” pieces, but they’re classic and black, meaning that they can go with anything.
I will spend $ on good shoes, though. I’ve been on my feet for most of my working life. It shows in every single possible way, and if I want to remain ambulatory, I have to take care of them.
It’s just you.
I care about clothes and shoes to the extent I want comfortable an appropriate for the occasion.
I don’t care about fashion, but I do care about style, and the impression I make. My own clothes are generally good brands, but purchased at the thrift store, and I choose items that make me look and feel good. (And the brand-name thing is more about the fit than the designer label. Cheaper brands are almost always too short, even though I’m not exceptionally tall.) When I’m out and about, I do find that others treat me a little more respectfully if I’m well dressed. My clothes are comfortable and practical, but you won’t catch me in public wearing sweats (or even disreputable jeans, unless I have to make the inevitable hardware store run mid-project.)
Just imagine, if the govt controlled our clothing, everyone would be walking around naked thanks to the shutdown.
Now, some might think that is a good thing, but I think you would be overestimating the number of beautiful people and vastly underestimating the number of uggos if you think that is a good thing.
I couldn’t care less about clothing and shoes, I’m perfectly happy in jeans and a sweatshirt/t-shirt
I don’t own any “dress-up” clothes, no ties, no suits, and I never will, I hate the bloody things
Back in the days when I worked retail, if I had to assist two customers, one in casual clothing, the other in a suit or even just a tie, I always helped out the casual customer first, the “PNG” (pencil necked geek, as I mentally referred to the “suit”) got helped after the casual customer, but the PNG got just the base level of interaction, not substandard, but none of the hints, tips and tricks I shared with Casual Customer
One other thing I have never understood is when a PNG is either driving TO work in the morning, or FROM work at the end of the day, why do they (still) have their stupid hangman’s noose on?
Okay, I’ll accept, for the sake of argument, that said PNG’s workplace has some form of dress code/uniform that involves a HN…
That said, in both the driving to and driving home from situations, they’re not actually in the workplace, and therefore, the HN is not necessary…
During the dark times when I was in a situation involving a dress code with a HN requirement (college prep school with HN dress code, and a couple low end retail jobs out of college) I only put the HN on when I arrived where it was required, and the instant I left the area, off it came…
Just a couple of my illogical idiosyncrasies/mannerisms, I know they make no sense
That college prep dress code was where my loathing of the HN stared, was nurtured, and developed fully into the white hot rage of my hatred of the HN
i buy all my clothes at the thrift store. i currently wear pants size 40 but i am actually size 28.
i just use a belt. i don’t care how i look with oversized pants.
my motto is: if i can make it fit, it makes sense.
Did they not have smaller clothes in the thrift shop? I have never seen a lack of smaller sizes when thrifting. You must be trying to make a statement. What that statement is, well that is anyone’s guess…
Best username/thread title combo I’ve seen in a while! Am I seriously the only one to have noticed this?
To answer the question on behalf of the one who came in on the wrecking ball – Shoes are necessary. Clothes? Feh. Who needs them?
[Just in case you’ve been living in a cave on Mars with your eyes shut and your fingers in your ears:* Miley Cyrus - Wrecking Ball (Official Video) - YouTube (NSFW, especially if you work on a construction site. At least put on a hard hat, honey!)]
- Cue chorus of Dopers insisting that not only don’t they care about clothes and shoes, they don’t pay any attention to celebrities or pop music and that they paid 28 cents for their weddings. Gawd, I love the Dope sometimes.
I’ve never been able to care about clothes or shoes. T-shirts and shorts in the summer, T-shirt and slacks in the winter. Luckily it’s been decades since I’ve been in a position where I had to worry about what people might think of me based on clothing.
Tee shirts, blue jeans, white athletic socks and walking shoes (Shoes worn only outside my condo, never inside)
Logans Run: jessica-6 jumpers…how bout a mandate to all that qualify.
