Does anyone else want the Cold War back just for the Olympics?

I miss the days when it was the Cold War in the Olympics. The East German judge giving the Brit or the American a 6.3 when the other judges were in the 9.2 area.

Pounding beer and cheering against the Ruskies. Now, that was entertainment…

At least back then the off-the-mark judges were motivated by ideology. Today they are just crooked or stupid.

Eh … I think a lot of them still hate Americans.

Yeah, we could use the Cold War back for movies, too.

I miss the East German judge - hell, the Russian judge wasn’t as much of a bastard as those guys.

Geez, I was just thinking, “Man, the Olympics were so much better during the Cold War.” I think the Olympics have lost a lot of intensity since then, although I still enjoy them.

And the east German women swim team had mustaches and you know if those little commie gymnists won a gold medal their parents got a week off from the gulag.

For a very recent related thread: Did the end of the Cold War change your interest in the Olympics?

At work I have on occasion made reference to the “East German judge”; my more youthful co-workers look at me with blank faces.

I feel so old. We really need to divide Germany again and face off across Checkpoint Charlie. Plus, John le Carre is really struggling to come up with relevant material. The Constant Gardener was pretty good, but The Tailor of Panama was a bald ripoff/homage to Greene’s Our Man in Havana, and The Night Manager, Single & Single, Absolute Friends, and The Mission Song are pretty weak.
