Does anyone in the USA actually say "happy holidays"?

Wow, 5 pages about happy holidays? It does sound a little silly to me too, but i think thats because Chrismas is probably viewed differently here in the UK than in the US.

Here its the time in the middle of winter where you get a few public holidays and are expected to get pissed with your relatives, eat hideous amounts of food, and give each other crap presents. If children are involved you will have to hang up a stocking and pretend Father Christmas fills it full of presents in the middle of the night. Pretty much everyone celebrates it. Most of the people i know are atheist and celebrate it, i have a few friends whose parents are Hindu and they celebrate it. A few Christians seem to labour under the misapprehension that its a religious holiday, but we know better.

From the sounds of it, Christmas still is a Christian holiday in the US and hence why you might not want to wish people well for it. Fair enough i guess.

Happy 25th of December!

Wow Owl, what have you got against frogs? (pssst, I thinkyour saying “mad as a box of frogs” is adorable and funny at the same time).

I forgot, were you for, or against the happy holidays phrase?

I find it amazing that catholic or christians have to say “happy holidays” to each other even when they know the person they’re saying it to is a practicing catholic or christian. I see nothing wrong with any of these greetings, anyone who tells others what to say is a ten karat asshole who can go fuck themselves. Diversity and tolerance also includes christians, catholics, EVERYONE, not just a certain group the PC crowd accepts.

(Bolding mine) Where the fuck is that mandate?

Great. Let me know when you see someone telling others to say “Happy holidays.”

Lame, telling people “You should say “Happy Holidays” instead of Merry Christmas because it may defend some”. My answer to that is “Merry Christmas mother fucker”.

This is why you get invited to all the really fancy parties.

Maybe it’s time for this to die a natural death…

What have we learned?

Do Americans say “happy holidays”?

Yes it appears that they do (I honestly thought it was something dreamt up by right-on TV companies etc and that no one in the real world would say it).

Why on earth do they say it?

Actually for quite nice reasons. They don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. So they don’t mind sounding as daft as a brush that did a course in advanced daftness at the university of daftnesshire. Bless.

Is it a PC thing?

Yes. Despite the endless blethering to the contrary - it is a PC thing. Anyone who says otherwise should read this thread again and if they still disagree then they are a poltroon. (And no returns).

Does it sound a bit mad to Limeys?

Well yes - but we think you’re all off your swedes anyway, so nothing suprises us.

Will the limeys ever say it?

You’re having a steffi guv!

Are there some rather over sensitive souls about?

It would appear so.

In other news the monster robot toys are the mutts-nuts, and Marge Simpson was very good (so was Liz Windsor). And the Mother in law is going home today. Rejoice! Rejoice!
