Does anyone know a good weight loss forum or another forum like The Straight Dope?

Somewhere that lots of people access, post & communicate with each other? I’ve been to Bodybuilding.com’s weight loss section, but they are too self-centered. I was looking for some other weight loss forum that can motivate each other, have a casual refined conversation what’s going on in life, etc.

Also, do you know any other forum like The Straight Dope here? I love this place with casual refined conversations about pretty much any topic from everyday-life & lots of people accessing. It’s great for boredom. I was just wondering if there are more forums like this.

If you get the Myfitnesspal app to track weight loss, calories, etc. there are discussion and motivational groups you can join that go along with it. The app is free.

Some of the subreddits have not-terrible fitness advice and discussion:

I know of one forum that’s exactly like the Straight Dope. Is there some reason that one is inadequate for you?

No, I like this place. It is just that I’m bored & I would like to have access to more websites like this. So that I can talk my boredom off all the time.

Reddit seems to complicated & messy for me in terms of interface. Will try Fitness Pal though. Thanks all.

To each her own, but the singular advantage of reddit is that there are a lot of people on it and the content gets shaped by the wisdom of that crowd. For some topics, it yields a pile of mush. But for fitness it works out OK. So if you don’t know much about the science of weight loss, you’re less likely to get misled by the many amateur nutritionists out there on places like app message boards who don’t know a caloric deficit from a hole in the ground (though I imagine MyFitnessPal is better than most).

Naturally, if you’re just looking for chitchat then one place is as good as another.

Sparkpeople.com. I’ve been a member for seven years (same user name, look me up!) and I credit them for my losing 40 pounds and keeping it off ever since.

Lots of good tools to track your food and your fitness, lots of good health articles, you can create your own blog or chat on the message boards.

Bonus…it’s all free.

Yeah, I am basically looking for 2 different things.

  1. A weight loss forum with lots of people. Some forums have to wait forever to talk with 1 or 2 people after posting.

  2. Just some more places to chat generally. For boredom. 1 place is good, but more places = even less boredom.

It works, providing you put in the effort.

I signed up for SparkPeople. Looks like a great place to get motivated during weight loss. I am not looking for a diet method. I already have one; it has worked for me; it is working even now. I just want to be motivated talking about weight loss. It is really easy to slack off. I ate hugely for the last 3~4 days although I plan to get back to my diet today.

What about another forum like the Straight Dope that I can just talk generally for boredom? Somewhere with lots of people like here. To talk about just anything from everyday-life generally. This place is good, but having access to more places like here means even less boredom.

It is fairly active and you can pick your area or scroll down to the general forums. It is similar to SDMB in that there are no annoying avatars or flashing gifs, and most people post well-written, thoughtful replies.

That’s great. Hope I can flood myself out of boredom while losing weight sedentarily.
