A friend of mine (no, really!) has a problem. His computer has become hijacked by a piece of malware which constantly alerts him he’s been infested by a virus and takes him to www.necessaryproducts.com whenever he logs on. It hasn’t changed his homepage – I reset his homepage to his usual site and I saw his computer attempt to pull it up before going to that website. We bought McAfee Anti-Virus software last night; it didn’t do any good.
Has anyone dealt with this and does anyone have any suggestions for getting rid of it? I’ve already suggested he contact McAfee.
I found that if you do these few steps, you can usually get rid of malware:
[ul]
[li]Download and run AdAware, and make sure that you update the malware definitions list- the program makes it easy.[/li][li]Download and run Spybot Search and Destroy. Same as above.[/li][li]Run your virus scanning program again.[/li][li]Download and run HijackThis! Save the output.[/li][li]Search for references to the malware on the Internet- look for instructions (there will be an indication of which registry values you need to change. Often, without this change, the malware just reinstalls itself.)[/li][li]Altenately, send the log to me, and I’ll be glad to look at it and tell you what to have HijackThis! remove from the system.[/li][/ul]
