I was hoping that you might be able to help me identify a very hard to locate film that my brother watched. He’s forgotten the title, but it sounds like a great film and I’d love to view it.
He describes it as a documentary type of film that tells the story of a young man who was recruited by some sort of philanthropist who supported various scientific undertakings. He is tasked with caring for an abandoned baby orca to study it, and lives in an isolated building in what seemed to be an arctic or similar type of area with a pool for the orca. Over time, he becomes emotionally connected with it to an extreme extent; believing that he is viewed as the orca’s mother figure. He speaks to the orca daily, and believes that it can infer most of his meaning through tone and context.
He ends up deciding to spend all of his time with the orca for many decades; essentially abandoning his old life and almost all human relationships. He feels that the orca is the greatest thing he has ever encountered, and treasures the relationship he developed, spending almost every day in the pool talking to it and attempting to understand more about their amazing minds. Because of this, his employer feels extremely guilty; believing that sending the young man into such an isolated place drove him to insanity. He pays all of the fees for the experiment, and allows the man to continue his study and relationship with the orca.
I can’t find ANY information on this film, and I’m really interested in seeing it.
