Does anyone know where I can buy wicker (not furniture)?

A couple of weeks ago, someone left a really nice padded chair by the dumpster in our apartment complex. I rescued it, since it was in pretty good shape. However, the seat of the chair is…non-existent. Thinking this would be a good DYI project, I went around town (with the chair) looking for straight wicker that I could weave into the chair myself. The Home Depot doesn’t sell wicker, and Michael’s stopped selling it years ago. The phone book only lists wicker furniture dealers. Ditto for the web.

So does anyone know where I can find a spool (is that how it comes?) of straight wicker that I can cut and weave myself? I live in Maryland and am willing to drive a few miles (within reason). I’m also willing to order it off the web.

Someone, please help me save this chair!

Er, make that “DIY project”.

If you’re mostly looking for the right Google search term, try something like “chair caning”. There might be classes available in your area; I haven’t tried caning myself, but I’m told it’s not something you really want to get into without at least a little training.

Here is a list of basket/weaving supply places. They will sell you raw material to weave with, and you can always stain it later to match the existing cane. Just don’t use a polyurethane stain.

At the wicker store of course. Just make sure they have a wicker license to sell that stuff.
