Does anyone know where the love of God goes? ( RIP Gordon Lightfoot: 2023-May-1 )

I’m glad that it’s a pleasant discovery for you, too (as well as apparently for Mr. Qadgop/Ditto).

I think one of the reasons I find Lightfoot so emotionally evocative is that it’s so closely associated with the happiest times of my youth. His passing is all the more emotional because the younger version of Lightfoot bears a strong resemblance to my lifelong best friend, someone who was best man at my wedding, and I was at his. Someone with whom we shared summer vacations, first as bachelors, then later with our wives.

He died last year from an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Not really relevant to the Lightfoot thread, I guess, but life sucks.

Dylan covered “Early Mornin’ Rain” on “Self Portrait” (granted, not his best record).

I’ve heard it a thousand times before, but OMG!

Two Gordon’s best songs are on the “Sundown” album, and I don’t mean the two hit singles. One is “Seven Island Suite,” and the other is “Too Late for Prayin’,” which never fails to move me to tears.

I love Gordon’s stuff. I particularly love listening to ‘Canadian Railroad Trilogy’. I’m so glad I saw him live just before covid hit.

I discover all the best talent after they die.

And “The Watchman’s Gone” and “High and Dry”. My parents had a copy of Sundown, which I played often enough that the album is burned in my mind.
