mikecurtis in post #16 linked to a video clip of Eddie Murphy’s Buckwheat character. It’s Buckwheat mangling the song lyric “looking for love” as in “looking for love in all the wrong places.” Apparently this is a commonly known reference in some circles.
Hey Pal, I’m here! I couldn’t log in under my original name so for now I’m WOOKINPANUv.2. I’m such a doofus They’re going to switch me back soon.
Thanks for asking
Heh. Where were you when I asked if anyone found it offensive? I started a thread about it in “The Old Times” (sorry, I’m a bit too green to find and link to it at the moment)
When Eddie Murphy was originally a member of the SNL cast in the early '80s, one of the characters he did was a grown-up version of Buckwheat, from the Little Rascals/Our Gang comedy shorts. Buckwheat, you may remember, had a strange speech impediment, and mispronounced pretty much every word.
There was an SNL sketch featuring Murphy-as-Buckwheat, which spoofed the direct-marketing TV ads that featured singers (like Slim Whitman) selling records of their greatest hits. In the “ad”, Buckwheat sang mispronounced snippets of various popular songs, with the “title” of each superimposed with a chyron on screen. “Wookin’ Pa Nub” was his version of Johnny Lee’s hit song, “Lookin’ For Love,” which was on the soundtrack to the film Urban Cowboy.
Thank you so much, I knew about the sketch etc, but context is everything. Knowing it was song title would have tipped me off! Thanks for setting me straight.
