I’m getting ready to replace my old automatic washer. I don’t like that about the only thing on it that I have much control over is the length of the cycle. Everything else — water temp, water level, how much water sprays on the clothes during the spin cycle — is either not controllable at all, or only gives me two or three pre-set levels to choose from.
And I ESPECIALLY don’t like that almost all washers “clean” the lint filter by flushing all the lint down the drain. I want to be able to scoop it out of the filter and throw it away, not clog up my pipes with it. The old GE Filter-Flo that my parents had was great for that, but apparently GE stopped making them.
So, does anyone still make a washer that gives you more control over the settings? Lets you fill it to any level you want, lets you keep the lint out of your drain pipe, lets you spray water on the clothes while they spin, etc.?
There are a number of ways to filter out lint, from disposable mesh “socks” that fit on the drain tube to a permanent wall-mounted cleanable unit. Look for something separate from the washer.
I’ve got a Samsung front loader - it has a dial you can turn for a bunch of common presets, but then you can override any of the individual components of the wash.
So for example, I pick ‘daily wash’ and the lights change to indicate:
40°C
Short prewash
2 rinse cycles
1000 rpm spin
crease guard on
(probably some other stuff)
But a button underneath each of those categories of lights enables it to be changed to one of the other options - so I might decide I want 3 or 4 rinse cycles (which I sometimes do if I am washing cloths to be used in my cider press)
I have a GE Adora top-loader from Home Depot, and it has a knob with presets, which vary the following options:
[ul]
[li]Soil level (basically the length and vigor of agitation)[/li][li]Temperature[/li][li]Water Level[/li][li]Spin Vigor (how fast & how long)[/li][/ul]
So for example, if I choose the “Jeans” cycle, it presets for medium soil level, warm water, moderate spin and auto water level. If I choose “Whites” it presets for heavy soil, hot water, high spin and auto water level. “Hand Wash” is tap-cold, extra light soil, extra low spin and auto water level.
But I can hybridize them if I so choose- a common one I do is to wash stuff like sheets on the “Whites” cycle, but in warm, not hot water.
Or I can set the water level off of auto onto 4-5 different levels.
