Does anyone play poker anymore? I moved back to the DC area a couple of years ago and lost my weekly poker game I had going in Massachusetts. No one seems to play cards here. Is this a lost art or am I just not finding the right people.
We played a casual game with a $20-$40 nightly limit. Nothing terribly serious. For a guy whose best athletic days are behind him it became my competitive outlet. I know this is hardly an earth shattering question but I would welcome any thoughts.
I used to…some people I used to work with had bi-weekly poker night. We played truly low budget poker, mostly with spare change and it was always just friendly competition. I learned some fun variations and always had a good time. I kinda miss it…hmmm, trying to get something set up?
While we’re talking gaming, I’d like to also ask whether anybody in the area plays Trivial Pursuit as well…for those of us currently in the red it provides the same opportunity to bullshit your way to victory at a fraction of the cost and I’d love to play with Dopers-
In fact…I like this idea enough that I think I’ll devote a thread to it…come see.
I haven’t played poker since college but my wife is into hand and foot which I find to be a much more social game since no one has to hide their cards and any number can play together. The game is played with a deck for every person in the game plus one so when you get past ten people shuffling gets very interesting. We havan’t had a game in a while.
I tried to get a card club started several years ago for any number of games. I was unsuccessful in starting a new one but got hooked up with an existing bridge, to which I went for about a year. Interestingly, the person who contacted me way back when was at the time the boyfriend of the guy who’s now my boyfriend (and who I initially met through the club, lost all track of along with everyone else in the club and met again about six weeks ago).
Weekly poker game went on for years. Took a little hiaatus while our main man (who is -obsessed- with poker) went out to the left coast, but now he’s back in town, and next week the weekly game starts again!
I play pinochle every other Tue night. Since 1977. Two of the guys in the group started it in 1972. It’s actually doubledeck pinochle, with our own rules, developed over time. Kinda like a poor guys bridge.
I think regular card games are mostly for old guys with no life.
I was just invited to a poker game for Friday night. As far as other card games, I have friends who spend 10 days in Main each may/june in a cabin where they spend an inordinate amount of time playing hearts or some such. They have tried to entise me to join them, but it would make me so crazy I would have to kill them all in their sleeps.
I think the availability of online games has killed the social card game. I play spades regularly on Pogo, but I have played with live human beings for years. Poker is a mystery though as it is the one game which really must be played face to face. I don’t know anyone who plays poker online.
So make this an invitation. I want to play low stakes poker in the DC area. Please respond if there is any interest from DC dopers.
Has anybody here ever played Rummoli? My friends and I always get together and play with nickels. I love that game. It can go on forever though. We played three games in one night, and we were up until 6:00 in the morning.
I had never played poker before a couple of years ago (though we played an awful lot of pitch in college). I got into a semi-regular (twice a month, maybe) card game and it’s just great fun.
The best part is seeing the strange variations we come up with after a few beers:
Bizarro Poker (lowest hand wins)
Communist Poker (all players must draw exactly two cards)
Redneck Poker (only red cards count)
Cribbage Poker (sort of a combination of both games)
Then, of course, there are the variations on each game: “kangaroo straights” (from an old Abbott and Costello bit, I believe) are often in effect: a 2-4-6-8-10 counts, and “turning the corner” is often called as well: a Q-K-A-2-3 counts.
Also popular is “In the Middle,” where you essentially bet on whether a card will fall between the values of two previously shown cards. I’ve been told it’s similar to Acey Ducey.
We only play for nickels and dimes, but it’s a lot of fun. So yes, people do still play cards, at least around here.
I have a regular poker game at uni… but, being students we use packs of salt and pepper we can grab for free at the canteen as gambling tokens. Everyone starts out with the same amount.
I’m also a huge Bridge fan
My parents got me into it.
I also like Warlords and Scumbags, Speed, and Cheat.
i play poker (texas hold 'em) frequently - have a set game every second friday for low(ish) stakes. There is a core group of four of us, but occasionally others are invited to play.
i always carry a poker deck with me (aluminium edged) and we frequently have spontaneous games (usually for matches) with our non-serious poker playing friends in the pub.
Hell occasionally someone will get cocky and insist they’d beat me/my other poker playing mates in a proper game. Then the matches get put away and we’ll rip them apart in a money game.
I’d actually say poker is becoming more popular over here on this side of the pond - particularly amongst students (i learnt how to play when i was a student) because one of the terrestrial TV stations screens late night poker games at about 2 O’Clock in the morning. Its incredibly good viewing.
Before a friend of mine got divorced I’d visit him and his wife almost every weekend and we’d get together to play Rummy. We also played another game called Three-Thirteen. Ever since he got divorced he’s been spending his weekends with his Girlfriend of the Week™ and we haven’t had the time to play very many card games since then.
