Yay! Manimal! I loved that show as a kid (I was probably around 8-9). It was practically obsessed by it–I would always gather my favorite animal toys (figurines, rubber play toys, etc…no fluffy ones!) to “watch” the show with me on my parents’ bed. Oh, man, I thought that show was just the coolest for a kid. As an adult, it would probably be lame.
I remember he would turn into a hawk, a tiger, and a wolf. I even have the transformation image of him turning into a wolf–the pointing ears, growing whiskers–well programmed into memory.
I was so miffed when this show was canceled I called the TV station to complain. My dad thought it was hilarious, helped me find the number and dial it, and was coaching me during the call: “Get real mad, Laura! Yell at them!” He wasn’t encouraging me to be a jerk, he was just greatly amused that an 8yro was bitching out a TV station for canceling her show.
Anyone remember a cartoon called “The Mighty Orbots”? That was my other favorite one-season show. The character’s names were Bo (“mistress of illusion”), Boo (“elusive Boo”), Crunch, Ono Nono, and hmm…a 4th “male” bot whose name I forget. Anyone?
Dammit, I can count. That would be 5th bot, not 4th.
Disclaimer: I’m sick. Malaprops and misspelling and overall bad writing are abounding. You probably don’t care, but even through this feverish haze, I do.
I loved Misfits of Science! I can still sing the theme song…those misfits, misfits of science, cha, cha…
I was in serious love with Johnny B, the electrically charged rock n’ roll dude. I must have been about 6.
Let’s see, there was Dean Paul Martin as the scientist who had no powers of his own, the big tall black guy who could shrink himself, the aforementioned Johnny B, and Courtney Cox as the teenage girl with telekinetic powers. Did I get that right? This is all from memory, I haven’t seen the show since it aired.
Anyone remember ‘The Day After’, the tv movie about a nuclear war? I remember that when it was set to air, there was a big stink about how it was too graphic for kids to watch. I didn’t watch it because I was too scared. I kind of regret it, because I’ve never seen listed again. Anyone see it?
Blue, I saw The Day After as a kid (I’m not sure how old I was, I’m thinking around 9-12) and it scared the hell out of me. I had nightmares for weeks.
I still remember some of the scenes…the moment the bomb hit and the old man’s car wouldn’t start, and then the man (sick with radiation poisoning) later traveling back to the city bomb site in hopes of finding his obviously dead wife. While he’s walking around the destruction, looters are pulling wedding rings off of charred remains. The haunting image of him calling for his love in that massive destruction will probably stay with me forever.
I’d kinda like to see it now, just to say, “Oh, it isn’t so scary.” I hope.
Kevin Peter Hall also played an alien big-game hunter several years before “Predator” in the 1980 classic gem “Without Warning,” one of David Caruso’s earliest roles.
Who remembers Ted Turner’s WTBS in Atlanta’s foray into original sit-com tv? In 1984 or 85 there were 3 shows they tried: Safe at Home, Rocky Road, and Down to Earth. They were all three terrible, and left the air within just a few years. I’ve never seen them since. I LOVED Down To Earth for some reason. They finally got wise and scrapped them for re-runs of Andy Griffith, Sanford and Son, Good Times, etc.
Special Bulletin was about a gang of “terrorists” who constructed a nuclear device. They felt that the world must be rid of nuclear weapons so they demanded the detonators from all of the submarines in Norfolk (unilateral disarmament, at least in part). A tourist caught the shootout at their ship in Charleston harbour, and after that a reporter went aboard the ship to broadcast their demands live.
i remember every single one of the shows that were mentioned…i gotta read a freakin’ book
but when “the Day After” was aired, i was in seventh grade, and my mommy wouldn’t let me watch it. (but she did let me watch “the Excorsist” if you can figure that logic)
