I swear there was a song in the 80s called Cry by a group called Watershed, about a 20something year old guy who was in love with a 16 year old girl. The only bit of lyrics I can really remember is “Cry… please don’t cry”, but I’m not sure if I’m remembering correctly. I also remember some sort of statement about not caring what her daddy does or something…
Anyway, I appear to be the only person who remembers this song (and no, it’s not “Into the Night” by Benny Mardones.)
Allmusic.com brings up only one band with that name and its albums were released in '94, '95, '98, and '03 with none of the tracks listed being titled “Cry”.
“Please don’t cry” + lyrics on google brings up Guns ‘n’ Roses and Elvis lyrics.
Well as I played the song in my head, I realized the lyrics were more accurately “Cry (cry) please don’t cry”. A Google search brought up the first hit as WaterFRONT, not Watershed, which has apparently been my problem all this time.
The full line is “Daddy would go to jail for you if he thought you were having the wrong sort of fun” which, I assume, means “Your father would murder me if he knew I were sleeping with you”.
It’s possible. That’s a very strange and clumsy way to put it though.
It seems to me sort of like saying “He would break his arm for you” instead of going to jail, meaning that he’d punch the guy and cause damage to his arm. That would be a strange way to put that, and I think this is similarly strange.
