Maybe a year or so ago as part of one of their list articles, Cracked told a story about how a blog post about Facebook was briefly the top search result for the word Facebook and thousands of people who didn’t know better thought the site was itself Facebook because they would normally just type Facebook into Google and hit the first link to come up and were very confused by what appeared to them to be a drastic redesign. Does this ring a bell to anyone else? I have been Googling like crazy and can’t find it.
I recall the story but also can’t find it on a casual search.
I don’t know about cracked.com, but I found this article about the story on Slashdot after Googling for a bit.
I remember this. Here’s the catalyst. In brief, ReadWriteWeb ran a story with the headline “Facebook Wants to Be Your One True Login”, and this ended up on Google news - you know how Google news results appear right at the top of Google’s search results? What happened was that people Googling for “facebook login” were presented with the story at the top of their search results, clicked on it, and were baffled.
The comments - sort them by age - are hilarious. “I WANT THE OLD FAFEBOOK BACK THIS SHIT IS WACK!!!” is the one that struck a chord the most. A chap called Rodrigo spots the problem early on, but there are dozens, nay hundreds of people who presumably just type “facebook login” into their browser search bar in order to get into Facebook.
The whole thing made me wonder why more people don’t embark on a career in cyber-crime, because there are lots of suckers out there. The kind of people whose PIN is 1234.
/me makes a note to change his pin number.
Thanks! The story linked above was indeed what I was talking about but I was really hoping to reread the entire cracked article that talked about it. Even the further details gleaned from the links above did not help me find it on their site. But I do appreciate everyone’s effort.
Thank you! That header must have come up in my searches but I dismissed it because I was sure the article was more broad and not about the internet specifically. Funny how memory is.
