Does Babylon 5 get any better? (pilot episode spoilers)

But in purple I AM FABULOUS!!!

<passes out>

And they made the most satisfying THUMP when they hit the ground!:smiley:

<thump>

I know I’m not 'Mika but BOXLEITNER IS A SMUG PRICK smugging all over the screen with his smug smugging face.

I can’t say any more for fear of spoilerage.

And Marcus is muy tasty.

My own opinion of O’hare was that the man had one facial expression and no acting ability. Boxleitner may not have been perfect, but O’hare suuuuucked worse than Mars Colony after a bombing if you know what I mean.

It’s sad that O’Hare is now most well known for Babylon 5. He is a fairly accomplished stage actor, and is really quite good. He just didn’t adjust well to acting on camera. That said, I hated him on Babylon 5 too. Hated. I almost didn’t get through the first season I hated him so much.

As I mentioned above, my first episode was “Into the Fire”. If I had started at Season One I might not have made it either. Especially after the really embarassing episodes like “Infection”, IIRC. Ugh.

I know “Gray 17 Is Missing” and “TKO” are seen as the nadir, but I disagree. “Infection” was the absolute worst to me.

-Joe

Funny. I liked O’Hare. I didn’t find him wooden; I found him subtle. But I seem to be fairly alone in that assessment.

I thought about it…I was really surprised when Sinclair left, and wasn’t sure about Sheridan for a long, long time. Like many TV watchers, I don’t particularly like change. Once I’ve gotten comfortable with a character, I want to stick with him.

But Sheridan has grown on me. And I think in the current situation he’s the exact right guy to be in charge of B5.

BTW, I had a good laugh last night when Sheridan went to tell Ivanova about all of the happenings on B5 and she rattles them off all correctly, one after another, and in answer to his shocked look, says, “The day I don’t know what’s happening on this station? Worry.” Priceless.

A lot of the S1 episodes are only redeemable in the context of the longer arcs. “Infection” was pretty much a mediocre ST:TNG episode but it does set up the whole idea of “organic weaponry”, hints at the previous Shadow war a thousand years earlier, introduces IPX and shows us Earth meddling in nasty biotech, all of which are important later.

No, I agree with you there. I found O’Hare quite subtle and quite likeable.

Boxleitner is like a brick made of horny badgers raping your face. The man has no subtlety and is smugger than Tom Cruise on “Tom Cruise is Great” day at the Scientology compound.

Sheridan over Sinclair any day. O’Hare wasn’t just wooden, he was petrified. Hated him with a passion.

Don’t forget, I didn’t actually see a lot of Sinclair since I skipped so much of Season 1. I actually don’t even remember him that well, and now Sheridan has defaulted as B5 commander for me.

I’m with you there, too. But I thought he was wrong for TV. He was a good stage actor that got caught with his TV down or some other mixed metaphor. Based on his S1 job, I wouldn’t mind seeing him do Broadway but would never cast him for a regular TV spot.

Kind of the reverse with Boxleitner. He’s a decent TV actor that would be all wrong for stage work. The cool thing about him is he absolutely realizes it. There’s an interview he gave a couple years ago where he comes across as a down to earth guy who treats it like a job and not a calling.

As much as I like O’Hare, it’s Boxleitner all the way. I mean, comon, he’s Tron. He fights for the Users! And younge races, and the Earth Alliance Constitution. And at one point, so as to not have to pay rent.

Hey now, Infection is like Star Trek V. We just don’t talk about it. :smiley: It does get some points for having a character call out the Commander on always putting himself on the front lines whenever there is danger, which is arguably downright irresponsible of him (he’s suffering from Survivor’s Guilt, due to his experience in the Battle of the Line.)

I wasn’t allowed to watch Tron with my ex. I kept yelling at Boxleitner every time he showed up on screen.

In the end, the show batted better than .750, which is amazing given the meddling that goes on with TV production. Out of a 5 year run, we got 3.5 seasons of good to great to oh-my-god!

Very few shows can claim that sort of average.

No, “The Path of Sorrows” from Crusade is like Star Trek V. Waaaaaaaay too much like Star Trek V.

I pretty much gave up on Crusade when they deployed the wave motion gun.

So…in the precursor movie, then?

-Joe

Indeed. Me and my housemates didn’t have cable at the time and were debating whether to get it for Crusade; did not feel the need after seeing the pilot.
