Does Babylon 5 get any better? (pilot episode spoilers)

Ok, it sounds like I don’t know enough about the telepaths and Talia yet.
And don’t worry, I’ll keep at it. I saw the encouragement and your change on this thread. So I am optimistic.
Hoping to get another episode or two this evening, but as it’s my ladies birthday today, I may have to put it off for later in the week.
Thanks!

Yes, last night. It was episode 10. It wasn’t my favorite. I understand the controversy, but I just have no understanding of having such extreme faith. So I had no sympathy for the family. On the other hand as they were an alien species, the Doctor had no right taking action against the parents wishes because as a Doctor of medicine, (who obviously must have studied xeno biology and medicine), he would have limited knowledge if there would be any other side effects of the operation. He had never treated anyone of that particular species. They said they were born from an egg, how do we know that there wasn’t a third life stage? Like a butterfly: egg–> caterpillar–> butterfly.
If the child was human, then I would fully agree that the doctor behaved as any other doctor should, but for one who has experience treating alien species…I really have trouble believing the doctor would take such action.

So, no. Not my favorite. However, you certainly made me analyze my reasoning.

re: Talia asking if Londo is serious rather than scanning him: it is mentioned later on (not plot-important, just an aside) that scanning alien minds is incredibly unpleasant for most telepaths, because aliens think… well, in a very alien fashion compared to humans. Their minds just aren’t wired the same way. So it’s possible that Talia simply wouldn’t have been able to tell even if Londo was a lousy liar.

Tell her happy birthday!

Birthday dinner out was postponed to the weekend so got through five more episodes this evening. (Eps.12~16).

Two of which were painful. TKO and Grail. Both episodes had heavy religious emphasis which seems to be quite prevalent in previous episodes as well. I’m hoping the overly “religious” stories will fade out.

Grail was seriously awful. A man searching for the holy grail? Really? I almost skipped that episode all together and I probably would have hadn’t it been for the part where Kosh appeared to be involved in the B5 underworld. Thought that was a wow moment until I realized it was an imposter.
TKO was also tough to watch with the visit of Susan’s Rabbi to help her morn her father’s death. Ok, I could understand a bit of that, but it was still a bit of a stretch for me.
As for the boxer wanting to prove himself in alien fighting arena. It was too close to home. For an alien fight, it certainly had some incredible resemblance to Thai kick boxing. They didn’t even disguise the name very well. “Mutai”. Sounds an awful lot like Muay Thai. Not only did they borrow the fighting, but even some of the rituals. Could have been a bit more creative.

On the plus side, episode 13 “Signs and Portents”. I’m getting a real first sense of something ominous in that one. And I did like that episode. I know the “Shadow” will be relevant in the future or so I’ve been told. One thing bothered me with that though. Morden goes to each ambassador to ask “What do you want?” To which each ambassador provides an answer or a reaction. However, Morden never approached Sinclair with that question. As commander of B5, I would assume he also is Earth’s rep on B5. So why does Morden not ask Sinclair that same question? I suppose I’ll find out in future episodes? Or was that an oversight?

Eyes was good and a welcome back to the real story after the two painful episodes in a row and I am guessing that this is where it will start getting better and better.
Anyhow, should be seeing a few more episodes tomorrow.

There is never an explicit explanation, but I think you will come to understand that the question would have been pointless. In time.

ETA: Oh, and TKO is pretty much universally reviled. I think there’s only one other episode that contends with it for the bottom spot.

Kosh prevented Mr. Morden from getting to Sinclair. Mr. Morden was not terribly pleased, but he got the answer he wanted elsewhere anyway.

He’s a good 1 1/2 to 2 seasons away yet. He’ll be hooked before Grey 17.

Yeah, but Grey 17 is so bad it might unhook him. I doubt it, but that episode is sooo very bad.

I guess he could skip Grey 17, but at that particular point, everything is so important that there’s probably something of significance I’m forgetting in it. Hell, even in season 1, there’s at least one important line in every episode, though it may take 3 more seasons to pan out.

There is the whole Neroon subplot to consider. That is vitally important, no matter how worthless the “A” plot is.

Huh, I actually though Grail was pretty good. Now, a dude finding the Holy Grail, that would be over the top. But someone just looking for it? That, I could buy.

Plus, kaboom.

I rather liked it, too. I enjoyed David Warner’s performance. I liked Jinxo’s backstory. I liked a couple of little things, like the trial scene and the ship Jinxo left on. And, of course, I loved “Boom!”

None of that actually means that it’s “good”, necessarily, but it successfully entertained me.

You are all obviously smoking crack. Grail is a great episode just because it has one of Ivanova’s famous whacky soliloquies.

“No boom today. Boom tomorrow. There’s always a Boom tomorrow.
BOOM!

Season 1 starts to seriously pick up steam in the last few episodes, but yes, Signs and Portents is officially the point where the series finds it’s legs.

You point out some good points regarding the episode. And now that you mention it I remembered chuckling at that in the end. I also remember chuckling at Londo shutting himself in his quarters when he finds out that a Nakaleen? was on board. So, I guess there were some good parts in there. I guess I just got a bit rolly eyed at the man’s quest. Perhaps the main problem was that it followed TKO, so I may have still been on a heavy critique mode.

Did see Eyes as the last episode last night, which was good. Next up Legacies which we will be watching this evening if all goes as planned. Plus an additional 2~3 episodes time allowing.

Well, recall that the point of the Quest was that it was a Quest, not that he was going to find anything. The man lost everything, and this is what he came to to cope. Altogether, one of the healthier responses we’ve seen people on this show have to rough times. But you get to see some of those folks later on.

Missed that bit. must have been the crack.
Still, he dies and sends Jinx on the same pointless journey.

I’ll put the crack pipe away for this evenings continuation.
Now, I’ve got to go cook and get ready for this evening’s entertainment.
Will try to pop in later if I have any comments regarding tonight’s episodes.

Well, that was important for him because it helped Jinxo overcome his fear of leaving the station. So the guy died, but he helped one person. Small victories and all. Most importantly, as said before, it has one of Ivanova’s notorious quotes.

I agree with those who think Grail is a good episode. It shows us an interesting side to the Minbari, who take spiritual beliefs seriously enough to listen to even a…lunatic. It also has a fun scene with G’Kar and him fighting, I believe. I also like that it ties into(I’m going off memory here) firing the first shot at the Minbari in the war, which makes it rather core to the main storyline.

Wow, I love this show.

I think you’re confusing it with “A Late Delivery from Avalon”, the one with Michael York as “Arthur”.

I did think two shout-outs to Arthurian legend was one too many, although the Arthur/G’Kar pairing in Avalon was pretty funny.
