No appreciable talent.
One chance was probably too many.
But… think of the children!
Dudes, she’s 27. She just appeared on stage with Madonna, who’s old enough to be her mom. She’s got a few years left in her.
Qft
she cant actually sing for shyte, it took her ages to be able to dance half as good as a billion other pop divas…remind me again what is it she does that makes her worth spending a dime on?
I caught part of her “Britney: for the record” (no, it’s not supposed to be capitalized) special last night before I went to bed. It was like watching Mount Vesuvius erupt in eXXXtreme slo-mo. I was horrified, but I couldn’t look away!
The bit I saw was mostly about her life in the public eye. She was headed somewhere in an SUV, and there were throngs of paparazzi swarming the vehicle. It cut to her being interviewed, and she was bitching and moaning about how she just wants to be left alone, how she wishes she could walk down the street without being a spectacle. She went on and on about how everyone analyzes every little move she makes. I just wanted to rech through the screen and punch her in the face. Um, hellooooo?? You are the one who made a spectacle of yourself, Miss Thang! Shaving your head in downtown LA? Acing like a zombie onstage at the awards show? And let’s not forget the infamous getting-out-of-the-vehicle-with-short-skirt-and-no-knickers ordeal. What the fuck? Attention whores tend to attract…What’s the word…Oh, right. Attention.
She really, really needs some counseling or something. There’s tons of celebs out there who deal with life in the spotlight just fine (some of whom even are the same age as Brit and had parallel careers) so there’s no reason she shouldn’t be able to.
Toxic is a great song.
I don’t think it is fair to write off her career because of her personal antics. Strictly from a music business point of view, her last CD sold like 900,000 copies. Why would a record company drop any artist who can sell 900,000 CDs?
If you are saying she should not be allowed to make records because she did stupid things in her personal life, than you would also have to stop Robert Downey Jr. from acting anymore.
Blackout is quite truly one of the most underrated CDs of last year and a lot of that had to do with the fact that there was literally zero promotion, aside from one crappy interview on Seacrest or something. That said, the CD is really, really good- I still have it on heavy rotation.
While Circus is no Blackout (a little more traditional, follows the formulas of some of her past albums), Circus is a good album. Some YouTube links for songs worth a listen:
Thanks for the links; it adds to the discussion.
I listened to all 3; the songs aren’t wholly unlistenable, but the ONLY parts of the songs that are worth anything are the parts Britney ISN’T doing.
The instruments and the chorus pretty much make the songs. The parts of her vocals that are even vaguely worth listening to are ones that are run through effects boxes…
Don’t get me wrong, I could see someone dancing to this, but there are better dance tracks out there, too…
I’ve never been able to understand most of the lyrics of her songs because she does this breathy, nasally thing that is also enhanced by electronics so I really don’t think she can sing. The thing that her popular songs really have going for them are catchy tunes. Frankly, you could probably give them to any number of other singers and they could sing them better without the use of electronic enhancements.
Does she “deserve” a second chance? Eh, she can keep trying as long as she wants. Maybe eventually people will get tired of it and she won’t get any more comebacks. I’m a bit tired of hearing about her so I don’t care.
To add to the discussion, I present her recently leaked (IE in the last 15 minutes) video for the title track, Circus. Youtube.
A damn good video. Probably one of her best ever, actually.
And as far as her not being able to sing- meh. It’s pop music. I know that’s a cop out and all, but when I go to a Britney show, I’m not expecting awe-inspiring, soul quaking musical endeavors-- I’m expecting a damn good show. And trust me, that girl puts on one hell of a show.
Say what you will about how replaceable she is, but if that were the case, she’d be long gone. Why was it that the two far more vocally skilled pop tarts that came out at the same time as Britney (Christina and Jessica Simpson) just never caught on the way Britney has? I mean, I love pop in all its forms and certainly Christina is far from irrelevant, but it’s always been about Britney. I hate to sound silly, but when you watch Britney perform, there’s just this fire in her eyes- it’s hard to explain. She has it, whatever “it” is.
Christina puts on a good show, too, but it’s not the spectacle that a Britney show is. And I mean, Christina truly is an amazing vocalist who has a giant stage of pyro like Britney’s. Like I said, it’s that unexplainable “it” factor.
And now that I sound like a dumb teenager, I’m going to go do something vaguely intellectual. Not listen to “Circus”, that’s for sure.
Good video, nice visuals.
Once again, the good parts mostly aren’t her, but she appears to be competent at the “flirt with the camera” thing.
The only problem is… I happen to know that she’s NOT a grade A beauty, with the marginal face and short legs. I kinda’ feel like I’m wasting my time looking at subprime product; it’s like eating sea food at Red Lobster when I know life is just too short for that… She also not sexy to me because she’s nuts, and I’ve seen her very, very messed up.
Still, neat visuals.
I’m not a Britney fan personally, but Rolling Stone did an article about her recently. Apparently her father has control over her career and her life, and has her on serious lockdown, running her life to a frightening extent. She can’t be alone at all, doesn’t have much visitation with her kids, and is micromanaged down to a hair. It kinda made me feel sorry for her. She’s a 27 year old mother of two being treated like a child, and who has absolutely no freedom whatsoever. Really, she has never had a normal life. I barely care about her, but in a general sense, her life sounds rather sad these days despite her celebrity.
As for her comeback, hey, if people want to buy her album and see her live, then she has a career. There’s no “deserve” about it. People are still interested in her, and she’s still making music so… there she is. I’m not buying it, but that’s not my kind of music anyway.
She’s being micromanaged because she displayed mindboggling incompetence. Her father has not been controlling her career right along; only after it became clear that someone had to take charge. One of the first things he did was shoo away all the sleazebag hangers-on she’d acquired. She has limited visitation with her kids because they kept having mysterious “accidents” when they were with her. And she blew off numerous custody hearings. She’s being treated like a child because she acts like one.
She’s a good heir to Madonna’s throne, seeing that neither of them really can’t dance or sing.
That said, I don’t get why people dislike her so much. She’s just another pop sensation who overstayed the freshness that made her big in the first place. She’s in no way unique and why some people get so riled up is beyond me.
So, she’s on tabloids, gossip sites, entertainment “news”. So what? If she’d never been born, someone else would be there to rile people up.
Judge her and her music/acting/dancing on the real merits. Not the tabloid frenzy. Is she better or worse than her contemporaries? Not really. She’s just another face /body that will deliver top40 songs to 'tweeners. A fresher face will be along shortly. Move along folks, nothing to see here.
Womanizer is so catchy it’s annoying even before completing the first listening.
However, if she wasn’t Britney Spears, would she be disallowed from being alone, at all, ever? Would she be on lockdown, with a legal conservatorship for LIFE controlled by her father? That amount of control surpasses what most people deal with even when they fuck up as Britney has. I think her dad has a monetary interest in controlling her, don’t you?
Regardless, don’t you have some pity for people who are so messed up that they have limited visitation with their kids, and Kevin Federline is the custodial parent? She’s sad and whatever success she’s having, she doesn’t seem to be able to enjoy it much.
Eh, people complain all the time about a friend or a relative they have who is irresponsible, self-centered and a neglectful parent. They always end up saying “But there’s nothing I can do! There’s nothing anyone can do!” I suspect that many of them would applaud the idea of conservatorship over these people.
If her father wasn’t controlling her money it would be blown on… well, blow. Call it control if you want, but I’ve never heard anything Brintey’s parents being the kind of Hollywood parents that steal their offspring’s earnings.
I don’t know, it seems excessive to me. She went through rehab, and time in a mental hospital. I can see family stepping in to get her through, but for life? That’s a bit much. I don’t know much about what her parents are like, but the article said her father was an abusive alcoholic himself who Britney’s mom divorced because of his problem, before he “got clean.” No one put him on a lifetime conservatorship, and now he’s controlling Britney’s life. Her mom? Well, look at her daughters. I doubt they’re the people you’d want controlling your every move.
No, she could never dance. Back during her initial fame I was in college and had no television and so didn’t actually see her much in the media, and I assumed she must be a good dancer because she sure as hell can’t sing. When I saw her 2002 Superbowl Pepsi ad before the trailers at a movie, I was actually rather surprised to discover that there is truly no start to Ms. Spears’s talents. She can’t sing OR dance.
My mother, sitting next to me in the theater, said “That Britney Spears is no Madonna.”
