Does Daylight Saving Time still save energy?

I understand Daylight Saving time was introduced to save energy, the theory being that if you get up earlier in summer, more of your waking hours will be in daylight and you use less energy for illumination. But nowadays it’s more common to use illumination throughout the day, and also air conditioning usage increases during the day. So is DST still saving us energy?

(Not sure which forum to put this, but I’m hoping there’s a GQ answer.)

Thanks for the links. But none of them has factual information on energy saving currently achieved by DST.
