That’s what I get for speaking off the top of my head. (I mistakenly remembered them as being orphans.)
My God! This is worse than I feared. (shudder.) Where is Frederick Wertham when you really need him?

Jimminy bleepin crickets - don’t make me look at an evil Mickey face right before bedtime, that’s just downright creepy.
Now, there were a couple of people on this thread who have banned Disney from their homes in the interests of [insert cause of the day here]. I’d just like to say that my five-year-old (because I watch these WITH her and discuss these WITH her) has a pretty real grasp on fantasy vs. reality. And she can also recognize and name the ‘Nutcracker Suite’ when it pops on the radio. And she knows she prefers the orchestra level in a show theatre. IMHO, not limiting her experience better prepares her for future experiences… what happens when a kid who’s never seen Disney (or whatever else) sits through the ‘rainy day special’ at a day care or at school? Just something to keep in mind before banning anything…
Pucky: Aren’t those superheroes all adults?
I mean, can you honestly imagine Doctor Doom’s mom hanging around the castle, criticizing her’s son dictatorial policies? He’d probably have her eliminated
Oh, yeah:
Don’t forget The Secret of NIHM. Mrs. Brisby is a widowed mother.
[hijack] why do so many people have the notion that Bambi’s mother died in the fire? Just to doublecheck, I pulled out my old Bambi tape and watched the scene where she was shot by hunters. Did Disney release a less-tragic (?) version of the movie where she survived longer into the fire scene (if so, they’d probably have to do some major adjustments to the second half of the movie) … or did the original story have her dying in the fire? [/hijack]
NIMH isn’t Disney.
Sure, it was animated by a bunch of animators Don Bluth (stole) erm, hired away from Disney when things were looking bad at Buena Vista, but it’s still Bluth animation.
Plus, what everyone else has said about the fairy tale/story background.
And may I offer up Perdita, of 101 Dalmatians fame?
[nitpick]
Mrs. Frisby
[/nitpick]
Absolutely right, in the book. It’s even in the title. (Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of HIMH), but IIRC, it changed in the movie. Why, I have no idea.
Got me. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen that movie
But how did he get through mad doctor’s school without her support? Then he goes off and conquers Lataveria and he never even calls. Would it kill him to pick up the phone once? Oh, never mind. I guess I’m just not as important as world domination.
I’m with the OP on this. Marvel Comics obviously hates mothers.
