Does everyone have a dirty secret?

I’m the only person I’ve ever met who’s never stolen a thing in my entire life. Even my goody two shoes sister stole a candy bar when she was 6. Well, tried to. My mom found it in the parking lot, marched her up, and made her give it back.

I stole one tiny item (maybe 10 cents) that I desperately wanted for my train set when I was about 10 and it has nagged at me for the last forty some years. So I had to give up a life of crime. There, you all know my dity secret. Is it still a secret if the internet knows?

I haven’t witnessed any murders or anything. It’s more stuff I don’t want to be judged for, or really humiliating experiences I’ve had that I’d rather pretend never happened.

This is how I feel too. I think we all have things we feel embarrassed or guilty about, but most of it wouldn’t seem that exciting to other people probably.

Hey, I had a train set! It was Disney and it went around the tree in a clover pattern. And in the “leaves” of the clover were Disney rides, and I had little Disney characters that could sit in the rides. It was awesome, especially since if you hit the roller coaster just so you could fling Goofy into the highest branches of the tree.

If you could read minds, would you discover that everyone has a dirty secret that you would find shocking? Limiting this to adults, I suspect it would be true of 90% of people.

Sexual abuse, domestic violence, suicide attempts, prostitution, self-harm, hit and runs, stealing, addictions… I think almost everyone has something to hide. Sometimes I wonder who I’m sitting next to at work or on the bus.

Or am I wrong? Are most people essentially blameless?

On that list I have done 5 out of 8 and I still think I am a pretty awesome human being. No matter how dirty a secret may be it doesn’t make you a bad person, esp of you managed to cut those things out of your life. I shared my “secrets” with trusted loved ones and it felt good to unburden myself.

On that list I have done 5 out of 8 and I still think I am a pretty awesome human being. No matter how dirty a secret may be it doesn’t make you a bad person, esp of you managed to cut those things out of your life. I shared my “secrets” with trusted loved ones and it felt good to unburden myself.
