I used to think about buying 5 or 10 acres here in KY and living on it. Then someone here posted a lengthy thread about dealing with their septic system a few years back.
That reminds me, my uncle had a stroke over a decade ago. His wife drove him to the small town hospital where he waited for over an hour, then they said they didn’t have the equipment to treat him so they had to transfer him to the nearest mid size city.
I’m guessing he spent several hours not being properly treated. In an urban area ideally you’d get treated much faster with clot busting drugs.
At least Vera, Chuck and Dave will be grown and gone.
People Who Have Not Seen The Avengers Movie:
Do Not watch the past few Bill Maher episodes until you do. Dickhead evidently Loves to be a spoiler.
The trouble with ‘living in a Cabin’ is that you’d want every single thing in your home now to be there.
A couple floors, a few bedrooms, indoor plumbing, a full kitchen and deck, a full workbench with all of your tools, all your TVs and computers with full internet access, a massive supermarket 5 minutes away, 20 different kinds of take out (that will not only take out but deliver ), a wold class wine and liquor store, ‘the good pizza’, movie theaters and play houses, clubs, beaches in easy driving distance, nearby inexpensive gasoline, insulation with full HVAC, washer dryers, city water, your favorite Dr living near by, alarm systems, and room for all of your friends to visit without breaking out sleeping bags.
You’ll also want to get along perfectly with your neighbors.

Cool Beans! Being neighbors with a mod is bound to pay off. ![]()
I’m already there. List of today’s activities: woke up late, fed cats, walked dogs a short walk, went to the kennel to check on hunting pack. Went in the house. Sat in a chair, heard dogs at kennel going crazy, stepped out saw a varmit, went got the 22 rifle, shot but missed. Meh. He’s scared off. Went in the house. Sat in a chair. Cats on lap, they are in protest because the air cond. is on. Now I’m hot. Go to turn up air. Sit in a chair. Cats in my lap. Exciting day.
I fantasize about a beach house, not a cabin in the woods, but I think it’s the same principle. When I’m sitting in traffic, sincerely wishing death on the driver of that Civic that cut me off when I’m already late and stressed, I’m vulnerable to the seductive idea of just lying on a beach all day listening to the crashing waves. In reality, I’d be sweaty, sunburned, and bored out of my skull after 20 minutes, tops. But I’m not meditating on the idea all day, or even for 20 minutes. In fact, I don’t get 20 seconds into the fantasy before a Tesla cuts me off. Freaking Tesla drivers…
Guys in Vietnam were always telling me “When I get out of here I’m moving to Alaska and live off the land.”
The conversation always went like this:
Me: What are you going to live in?
I’ll build a cabin.
Do you know how to build a cabin?
I can learn.
Do you realize that other than in Southeast Alaska, the trees are not very large diameter.
I’ll haul them in.
On what?
A truck.
So there’s going to be a road where your cabin is?
:: confused look::
So what are you going to live on?
I’ll hunt and fish.
What if there’s no fishing river or lake nearby? What if you don’t find any animals to kill?
Oh, I’ll manage.
Where will you store the meat?
In my freezer.
So there’s going to be power in this remote cabin?
I’ll have a generator.
How will you get it there? Where will you buy fuel?
::confused look::
And on and on and on.
What? Are you saying that Thanos lives? I have a lot of kids, we don’t see a lot of movies till it gets to the home market.
I am still a couple of decades away from retirement, but after observing what my parents have been through, I would say that my goal would be a small low maintenance home in a decent sized city not too far from a grocery store and a hospital. Access to public transportation and low cost activities would be nice as well.
An isolated cabin out in the woods would be nice to visit, but would be tough day to day.
My own retirement plans include bouncing between Barcelona and a little town in the mountains which, being the equivalent of an American county seat, has a lot more services than would be normal for its size; it also happens to be 20km away from the province’s capital. I’d consider a cottage in the middle of a forest if we can make it this barn.
(I really mean the barn. The current owners can keep the rest.)
I want to retire to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). And when I’ve had enough of life, ima just gonna try to cross the road one day.

I advise anyone wanting to really live far out to try it a few times first for vacays and such. There’s nothing like the fear of dying to change your mind about secluded-ness.
I love it. It’s taken a few years to perfect. We still have upsets s bobbles. We manage.
I blame Airwolf…
As long as I have water, electricity, internet, and could purchase basic necessities within a ~40 minute drive I could be happy lots of places. I don’t want neighbors.
How do you think I chose my screen name here?
Two, maybe three days, is all I could handle.
