Does God have to directly cause EVERYTHING?

Religious folks routinely justify the occurence of bad things with such cliches as “It’s God’s will”, “It’s a test of your faith”, “God works in mysterious ways”, etc. Why does it have to be the work of God? Just because God is, according to Judeo-Christian belief, omnipotent, does that automatically mean that all tragedy is the result of divine intervention? Can’t bad things happen on their own?

Life is a tragedy for those who feel and a comedy for those who think.

Of course, this would also apply to the occurence of good things.

Life is a tragedy for those who feel and a comedy for those who think.

Well, of course God hasta be the cause of everything. Otherwise, he would hardly be truly omnipotent. Also, whether or not He really does cause everything, He certainly put everything in motion.

God told you to write that.

If the bad thing is not God’s will, then it is because of the absence of God, or so some would have us believe.

I think God will like me since I don’t blame Him for anything.

I’m busy watching a sparrow fall right now, but if you leave your name and your sin after the tone, I’ll get back to you sometime before I throw you into the firey pits of Hell.

I giveth…and I taketh away

You may want to explore Deism; here is a source:
http://www.religioustolerance.org/deism.htm
and a brief quote from the site:
“Most Deists believe that God created the universe, “wound it up” and then disassociated himself from his creation. Some refer to Deists as believing in a God who acts as an absentee landlord or a blind watchmaker. A few Deists believe that God still intervenes in human affairs from time to time.”

If this is the case, is God responsible for Adam’s Original Sin? It would seem that God does not have total control. Perhaps saying so relieves mankind of responsibility.
If God has control everything there would be no logical reason for sin.
