Does it matter which coax jack I plug my cable modem into?

I just moved into a new apartment and am using Time Warner cable. I bought my own modem and router so I’m in charge of installation it seems.

My question is, the cable modem only seems to work when I plug it into a certain coax jack in the living room (there are 2 different ones a few feet away from each other). I’d prefer to have the modem and router located in my office instead, but when I plug the modem into the jack there it just sits there, blinking, never connecting to anything.

Can someone explain this to me? Is it possible to get this to work myself?

It shouldn’t matter which coax jack you plug it into, but my guess is that one works because it’s actually wired up, while the other is not (or has a wiring problem). You may be able to unscrew the panel in your office and see if the other side is connected to anything*.

If it were me, I would probably ask my apartment manager or landlord to sort it out. Good luck!

*Always take the necessary precautions when dealing with house wiring of any kind. If you don’t know what they are, look them up.

Take the cover off the wall. There may not be anything connected to it. Or it may have been cut at the box outside as some point. Or it may simple be a jumper to to the other one in the living room. In short, just because there is a jack on the wall doesn’t mean it’s hooked up.

Fixing coaxial connections is trivial quite simply as Comcast and its ilk just run a new cable for a new customer who wants their TV in a new location. Simply follow the lines outside the apartment/building and make sure they are connected properly. If the lines are all fully enclosed in the walls and you don’t know where they lead, you are going to need someone to help you… most likely a Comcast technician or property manager who knows where the lines lead.
