Does Lake Chad still exist?

Many years ago I had the pleasure of seeing a number of slides taken from the Shuttle aimed at the earth. This official photographer pointed out that Lake C had, once the 6th largest lake in the world, has essentially dried up.

The references I have been able to find on Lake Chad are not current. I would appreciate getting some updates on Lake Chad at this time and how the surrounding population has suffered with its absence…if it indeed has disappeared.

Interesting. The National Geographic site says that Lake Chad has never been this low, but this website says that fossil evidence suggests that Lake Chad has completely dried up a half-dozen times in the past thousand years. Apparently, Lake Chad is extremely shallow, so even small changes in wather depth can make for large changes in lake size.

yes, lake chad is only about 25 feet deep at it’s deepest, and the size changes all of the time

I did read both articles in the past…written in 2001 and 1997 respectively. Does anyone know the status of the lake currently?..the past year?

Here is a series of Landsat images showing the shrinking of Lake Chad. The most recent is from December 2002. Still shrinking, it seems.
