Does liquid iron supplement cause tooth loss?

I remembered this as a kid: If you gave a kid liquid iron supplement and it touched the teeth, they would fall out. As an adult, a friend told me she had dentures because she was given a liquid iron supplement as a kid, and her teeth fell out. I remember thinking, “Oh, yeah, that’s right…”. Then later, I thought, “WTF? That doesn’t make any sense?!!”

Anybody ever heard of this, and is it true? And if so, why?

Thanks!

Liquid iron supplements can certainly cause staining of the teeth (cite), but I can’t find any mention of actual tooth *loss *in the literature.
