IANAScientist, but this link provides an article from the Journal of Clinical Investigation which reports that Growth Hormone production peaks with the onset of deep sleep.
To the extent that GH is a prerequisite for growth, I’d say that sleep correlates with growth, and lack of sleep would, then, probably prevent full realization of one’s growth potential. But, again, IANAScientist, so I may be misunderstanding this relationship.

is it possible to “catch up” on growth? say a person didn’t sleep enough for about 4 to 6 months…and this person is 12. later, he starts sleeping better. would he catch up on growth?
What’s the possibility that cause and effect are reversed? For example, a child’s inheritance is for shortness – he or she is never going to reach more than five feet regardless of environment. Will that child need less sleep?
