I doubt they will get much done. They spent 8 years calling Hillary a bitch, now if someone calls Michelle that they scream racism. Even a simple word like “uppity,” is now racist.
That’s the thing, blacks can call Obama whatever they want, but if a white says it it’s racist.
I heard on the news a black guy they were interviewing off the street said “It’ll be nice to have a nigger in the White House.” And the news people were just stunned.
For blacks it’ll be gold, because they can say what they want.
It’s kind of like I can say whatever I want about my mother but you can’t
Do you watch the Daily Show or Colbert report or did you get confused? The Daily Show has not spent 8 years calling HRC a bitch as far as I know. That was the pundits on Fox. I’m sure they will continue.
Not the loss of Republicans in the White House so much as, the loss of the Bush administration in particular, which didn’t even really try to pretend they cared about their public image.
NOW? When the fuck was it not racist to call someone uppity? Did you used to regularly walk down the street and call people of all races uppity if they stepped on your shoe or something and are now losing a major part of your vocabulary?
If you’ve been calling people uppity all your life and have been confused at the reaction, here’s your chance to understand why they were offended!
Don’t forget, there are still 200+ Republicans in Congress who are going to be in a bad mood for the next 4-8 years. They are always good for comedy gold as well.
Hey now, since when did “uppity” suddenly become a racial slur? My grandmother used to chastise me with that term all the time. She also used to call me a “porch monkey” all the time when I was a kid because I’d sit on the porch and stare at my neighbors.
I remember when Ford took over for Nixon. I think it took about two months before the comedians decided he was clumsy, and thus had material to use. During that time they were at a loss, coming off the Nixon administration’s circus-of-fools-and-crooks and faced with an administration headed by a fundamentally decent man (comparitively speaking, of course).
I remember when Clinton was elected, and *Murphy Brown * found rthat it had no material. The writers for that show had complete disrespect for anything done by a republican but could not see anything a Democrat did as mock-worthy. (I believe the creator/producer someone was a personal friend of the Clintons.) The show limped along and folded soon after.
I give the comics about six months to find their new target or a hook for Obama. Some of the audience will be offended, many people who do not watch the shows will complain, but their jobs will be secure. Ther is nothing a politician can do that cannot be ridiculed.
True, but a not-insignificant amount of time was spent reacting to statements from the administration itself.
I’m sure they’ll pounce on anything goofy in politics and the media as a whole. I also expect to see a return to non-political segments like when they got wind of a town or person making some crazy public claim and sent a correspondent to make fun of them. Sort of like what they did with Wasilla recently.
It’ll be less biting and incisive, which was half the fun, but I’m sure they’ll find material.
It could take them time to sort it out. Stewart was clearly joyful when Obama won, and I remember once or twice in the last few months when he had to chide his audience for giving a chilly reception to any kind of joke. I also remember a distinct hush in a recent show when a guest pointed out Biden’s vote in favor of the Iraq war authorization. He’ll find a way to mock the Obama administration and the audience will eventually find a way to be comfortable laughing at it.
There’s plenty of material in the media world, folks. Did any of you see Keith Olbermann Wednesday? He was crowing. “Bill Kristol… you don’t matter anymore!” “Rush Limbaugh… you don’t matter anymore!” “Bill O’Reilly… you don’t matter anymore!”
You think Stewart and Colbert can’t mock Olbermann’s excesses the same way they’ve mocked Hannity and O’Reilly’s?
Jon Stewart has been pointing at laughing at both sides of the aisle since he started. The only difference is that now he has more fodder for Dems than for Republicans. There will be no shortage of foot in mouth disease I’m sure.
And, if they are not able to adapt, then they will join the ranks of the “no longer relevant” and some one else will arise to fill the gap. Happens all the time in entertainment.
Was Murphy Brown ever that political before Dan Quayle tried to made it a leitmotif critique about single-motherhood as part of his election campaign?
Why wouldn’t you expect them to be a bit one-sided after the show was basically held up as being contrary to family values.
Expecting balance when all things are equal is one thing - but when your side goes around saying that Hollywood, and metropolitan half of the country, responsible for the majority of all prosperity, is somehow godless and evil, it’s hardly surprising that the zeitgeist isn’t “true neutral” about the Republicans.
Did anyone see Wednesdays episode when he made a joke about Obama’s acceptance speech (I’m sorry about being vague on the specifics)? After the joke in a kind of mock worry voice he said “How are we ever gonna make this shit funny?” I thoroughly enjoyed that moment.
The show is going to be fine guys Al Franken has a chance to become a Senator! That alone could provide a majority of the shows material for the coming years.
It was something like showing a clip of Obama saying, “I’d like to present the person who has stood by me all this time, who’s supported me and given up so much, the love of my life…” and then Stewart cuts in with, “William Ayers!” There was some amusement, but after a pause he added the comment you quoted.
I always felt Stewart’s real target was the media adn especially the 24 hour news cycle that produces idiocy around the clock. That should probably continue.
