I put some in smoothie to thicken it up a little and add some protein… but I got to wondering that maybe it wasn’t going to do the job.

There’s no particular reason that it would have to be heated to provide the same protein hit. Generally you heat it when using as a substitute for grain flour in a situation where you heat it just because that’s how you make the food. Heat will alter texture and some other things but doesn’t enhance the protein.
