I haven’t really listened to sports talk radio in over a decade, but when I did, the nationally syndicated and local shows alike both treated soccer somewhere on a continuum from hostile indifference to unmasked hostility. Similarly, both also had hosts that leaned conservative.
These days, MLS is big enough that it’s hard to ignore, Euro leagues are gaining in popularity with tv viewers, the Club World Cup was a … thing, which took place here and which you-know-who somehow, yet not unexpectedly, made all about him, and there’s the actual World Cup next year, which will probably yield the same result, Trump-wise.
So Dopers who listen to sports talk radio, does it give soccer any attention and/or respect? And has the matter of Trump inserting himself into soccer come up?
We have two local sportstalk stations, one of which broadcasts the local MLS team. They certainly pay attention to the local team, but not to the MLS in general. Contrast that to their conversations about baseball, where they’ll spend an entire segment discussing a trade of two minor leaguers by teams in the other league.
Discussions involving Trump are usdually left to the local newstalk stations.
Since the Cubs are having a good year and NFL talk never ends even if the Bears haven’t been relevant in a long time, no soccer doesn’t get much coverage on sports talk radio here.
I admittedly am not avid listener, mostly streaming on my commute or listening on lunch break at work to block out the noise.
The last time I remember them talking soccer was right after the Liverpool terror incident with the car driving through the parade
Not really. We also have two sports stations in our market, one of which broadcasts our MLS team. They get coverage around the games and when they have special programing, but in general, it never comes up in normal shows.
While the twin cities has had MLS for the last 10 years and a new stadium to go with it 6 years ago they don’t get much attention on sports talk radio. Maybe game results on local news but that’s about it. I think it is mostly in descending order: NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, WNBA, MLS
New York sports radio almost never mentions it. With 2 NFL teams, 2 MLB teams, 2 NBA teams and 3 NHL teams they have plenty to talk about. They barely talk about the Nets, Devils and Islanders.
