I would have thought that the larger drops, like larger snowflakes and larger hail, have travelled the farthest. But I just read a comment on my weather page in the paper that fine mists are regular drops that have fallen so far that they pick up speed and break apart.
Which is it?
According to this site raindrop size is determined by the speed at which air moves up. The faster the air moves up the more it can support heavier drops of water allowing them to collide and form still larger drops. At some point they get too heavy and fall.
