The actual waiters and waitresses at this place make at least minimum wage and get the occasional tip and I try to give them whatever change I have since they are trying to support themselves or go to college or whatever. I don’t believe I have ever tipped more than 75 cents or a dollar since they are carhops-they spent less than a minute bringing me my food and my money is not supposed to be their sole income since they get paid more than 2.13 an hour.

This part bothers me more than the charity. Wow! A whole $2.13 an hour. If they work there full time and play their cards right, they can make a whole $85.00 a week.
Seriously, why wouldn’t you tip them what I assume you’d tip someone in a restaurant?
You said yourself it was hot out. How do you know what they’re doing with their money?
$2.13 an hour is what tipped waiters/waitresses get. Per the OP, the carhops get minimum wage or higher.
You know what I wonder now, though, is why the group wasn’t fundraising through their church. My mother’s church has silent auctions, and pancake breakfasts, and suchlike as fundraisers for church-related groups.
If this is in fact the case then I’m inclined to agree with you. I was under the impression that this was taking place in a setting where the carhops were customarily tipped. My apologies, pbbth. I seem to have misunderstood the situation.
I would hazard the guess that their fundraising at the drive in was in addition to fundraising through the church rather than in place of it. Just a guess, though.
